bradwds, i came on here to write about that too. it is definitely a variation on music found within The Beautiful Game. I think it starts from the beginning of "Journey to the Cemetery". Composers have historically done this kind of thing, so I can't blame him. Afterall The Beautiful Game is not well known enough for most people to see the connection.
Also, there are moments in The Woman in White that sound like variations on themes in Whistle down the Wind!
what is this sampling of Beautiful Game in "Journey to the Cememtary?" I have listened to both today to compare and I don't see any resemblence.

I don't see how so many people can bash Gerard Butler when Emmy Rossum is not that great herself. Listening to it several times over, I can hear how her voice sounds nice some of the time but she strains and wobbles and has a hard time with her high notes! "Raoul I've been there" is particularly bad. That is by no means what a Christine Daae should sound like. She is an opera singer in training sure, but she should have something to prove she has the chops to become one. Sarah Brightman is not the one and only Christine in my book, but they could have done much better than this girl.
Just because it's a movie, that does NOT excuse weak singing especially when part of the story is built around her voice.
Emmy may not be the greatest singer in the world, but Im still glad they went with her and not someone like Kirsten Dunst or one of the girls from the O.C. or some random pop singer (No offense to Kirsten, or the OC girls, or random pop singers..except maybe Christina Aguilera...)
I'm still curious to hear how Anne Hathaway would have done.
....but Im rooting for Emmy, and I happen to like her. Plus, she's astoundingly pretty, and Im saying that as a totally staight female who is seeing the movie purely to salivate over the glory that is Patrick Wilson.
EMMY IS HOT AND MY FIANCEE TOO!
ok, she doesnt know it yet... anyone wanna help track her down so i can propose?
in all seriousness, she does have her weaknesses i noticed too, but i'm pretty sure she does an excellent job... atleast i hope! im just keeping in mind that ALW was there, so im sure the right decisions were made.
Listen to the Overture of The Beautiful Game, 35 seconds in...it is totally the same music in "Journey to the Graveyard!" Well a variation, but it's obvious they are one in the same.
for me, Emmy Rossum is always gonna be "that girl from 'Genius'..."
Who is that in your RENT picture and where did you get it?
anyone else think Giry's accent is great? i laugh everytime i hear it... reminds me of a female Speedy Gonzales :P
"EMMY IS HOT AND MY FIANCEE TOO!
ok, she doesnt know it yet... anyone wanna help track her down so i can propose?"
That was such a Waiting for Guffman type line!
haha is it? i haven't seen it... don't hate me :P
I have some friends over and one of them brought over the POTO soundtrack.
The orchestrations are right on the money, but then again they're working with a full-fledged orchestra here. Ever notice how movie versions of broadway shows almost always sound better?
Vocally the woman who dubbed Minnie Driver ("Carlotta") and Patrick Wilson ("Raoul") impressed me the most vocally.
What can I say about a musical where the orchestrations and the supporting actors OUTSHINE the leads of the piece?
The producers really dropped the ball on this one. Their feeble attempt to appeal to the MTV Teeny-bopper crowd by casting someone to sing the "Phantom" like a pseudo-rock star is laughable. The little "rasp" in his voice gets old very fast.
Emmy Rossum does a good job but I've heard the part of "Christine" sung so much better than this.
"Masquerade", a song I found a little irritating is improved for the film. I also like the way they break off from entirley singing and go into recitative.
Overall, it's sad, that long after the stage show has closed and becomes just a "memory" this film will be all we have.
I have to agree with a lot of the posts here, "Masquerade" sounds better than it ever has...and the more I listen to both Emmy and Gerard, the more they grow on me. Patrick Wilson, on the other hand, is always fantastic and impressed me right from the start. Hope this movie makes him a massive star.
Got it yesterday, and it is really good. Orchestra sounds amazing, Patrick and Emmy are phenomonal, and Butler is decent. Masquerad and "Notes" both sound great.
I, too have noticed the weak points. But it's okay. I mean, in the novel she falters at times when she's afraid. So, it's understandable...um....also she's supposed to be very young (and ER is) so that plays into it a little bit. I don't mind GB so much now that I've been listening to the soundtrack for four days straight and love it...but stillwishthathughpanarowassingingdammit
oh, and...Patrick Wilson(Raoul)= not dubbed.
or am i wrong? I don't think I am.
No, Patrick Wilson is not dubbed. Marquise meant Patrick Wilson and the woman who dubbed Minnie Driver were impressive.
I haven't bought the CD yet, but I've heard some clips from Amazon.com and the "Phantom" movie site. And I have to say, I'm not the biggest "Phantom" fan, but I'm terribly excited about this movie. I have a feeling that they got it right. Now, if they got a vocally trained Phantom, it would be perfect, but what can you do...
Let's hope "Rent"'s people are behind the "Rent" movie as much as Andrew Lloyd Webber was for this movie.

Ok, Rossum and Butler just don't cut it! I have listened to this recording numerous times, and it is having the reverse affect on me. The Phantom is supposed to have a voice that mesmorizes - Butler's doesn't. It's not beautiful, it's not powerful, it's not convincing. When Rossum says, "He's here, the Phantom of the Opera" - there is no acting. I could say it better than her! I like her vocally when the role doesn't call for power or high notes, but when it does, she just doesn't cut it.
I think people on here, myself included, were so exciting about the recording, that the reaction was severe whether you like these two or not. I bet, as time goes on, the soundtrack will sit unheard on people's shelves while they return to the OLC. Even today, I listened to my Vienna recording, because I feel it has the best cast I've heard.
All in all, I think these weaker vocals are going to impact the success of the film.
hey Loge, are you talking about when Christine says that line during Il Muto? to me it sounds like Meg says it and then Christine says a little quieter "it's him..." kinda sounds like 2 different voices. i'm not sure though.

zepka- giry's accent! lol i noticed that too
and I really don't like how at the end of the title song Christine's "ah's" are faded out. Yes, I understand how it fits into the plot, but I love how on the OLCR her "ah's" are very bright, and right there, u know? lol hard to explain.
and yeah, gerard Butler isn't bad but he isn't my favorite phantom ever. he's...decent.
i do like how it switches to an echo when she starts doing the "ah's"... its different but sounds cool
OK, I am not that familiar with the show, but did they cut something out of the song Phantom of the Opera?
The third verse was cut from the title song.

Hi Everyone,
I grabbed the soundtrack last night and was pleasantly surprised. I had heard soundclips on the web and was expecting the worst but they must have cleaned up the tracks somehow because those soundclips did not represent the CD, in my opinion, at least.
I think everyone agrees that the orchestra is incredible. As for GB, with whom I was most concerned, I thought he had his moments and the moments he didn't have weren't that bad. Granted I still wish Hugh Panaro was The Phantom on the soundtrack but I thought GB (and I'm sure I'll take some hits for this) had a stronger, fuller, more haunting voice on the soundtrack than Crawford did on the original cast recording and that's what I was looking for. I agree it sounded a little rock starish, like many have mentioned, but I didn't mind it and was pleased overall. Can't wait to see the movie!

Patrick is such a romantic Raoul. His voice, both speaking and singing are perfect for the Hero role. *sigh*

Beacon... that's your completely unprejudiced opinion, right?
"but I thought GB (and I'm sure I'll take some hits for this) had a stronger, fuller, more haunting voice on the soundtrack..."
No hit from me. I agree with you. I, too, was pleasantly surprised with what I heard.
