20 reasons why I love Raoul:
1. Obviously in poor health he still insists on going to the auction to get the monkey music box.
2. He's confident not arrogant. When he is introduced as the new patron he clearly understands his family's position and role in the local community--and is prepared to be an active participant in his new responsbility.
3. When he recognizes Christine he is quick to want to find her. And, when he does join her in the dressing room...he immediately seeks to make her comfortable by connecting with her through her memories of Little Lotte. He doesn't swoop in like the Vicomte, the new patron...he enters as he childhood sweetheart.
4. He is genuinely concerned about her during Notes/Prima Donna. Worried, pacing, searching...
5. He rushes to her when Buquet is hung and follows her to the roof...and he comforts her so sweetly and genuinely. His smile, his nods, his embraces and kisses. Young love. True love. *swoon*
6. He gets engaged to her and wants the world to know. Raoul is pleased and proud to be marrying Christine--regardless of "class" differences.
7. He jumps into a fiery pit after the Phantom and is ready to do battle.
7. He pushes Madame Giry for an explanation.
9. He sleeps outside Christine's door to protect her. How gallant and what a gentleman.
10. He races to the cemetery on horseback, engages in a swordfight is wounded, and, when he could have killed the phantom he listens to Christine's pleading and relents. He could have shrugged her off but he values her concerns and her heart.
11. He devises a plan he hopes will rid the Phantom from their lives.
12. He is obviously upset and worried during PONR...watching his sweetheart caught in a "worst case scenerio."
13. His immediate concern is to find her...and he battles his way to the Phantom's Lair.
14. Tied to the portcullis, being strangled by the Phantom's rope he begs for her forgiveness for the situation they are now in...and for her not to throw her life away in order to save his...and you can tell he means it.
15. Bound, with a rope around his neck he still rages at his captor. He does not beg for himself, but for her safety.
16. His heart is breaking before us as he softly sings "I fought so hard to free you."
17. Their frantic embrace once he is untied.
18. The sweet look on Old Raoul's face as he walks unassisted
to give his sweetheart a final gift--one that will mean
so much for her. The smile, the sigh. He is happy that he
could do it.
19. Seeing the rose and the ring he stiffens and remembers the
swordfight long ago. He has never forgotten...on one
level he has remained vigilant all these years.
20. At no point in time did he ever seem to be anything than
what he truly was. A man in love and willing to risk his
life to free the woman he loves from a terrifying
relationship and keep her safe.
Yep...I love Raoul.
