In his usual way, Doyle will have the company playing lutes and other Japanese instruments as they wander about the stage. Pacific Overtures

I really hope he doesnt screw it up. Like others here, I saw the original with my then husband. We were in standing room for the last preview, the night they emptied the theatre in the middle of the final number because there was a bomb scare (We went back again a couple of weeks later so I could see how it ended). Two high points for me that night: (1) the black dragons appearing, and (2) Steve whispering, "Turn around very slowly." Right behind us: Harold Prince, Stephen Sondheim, Boris Aaronson, and Florence Klotz. I was a restrained Canadian outside as I told them how much I was enjoying the show, but inside I was screaming like a happy twelve year old...

I am surprised the show is still not selling out despite being in a very small theatre.

Does anybody know how many instruments (traditional or otherwise) are used in this production?

"It does what a musical is supposed to do; it takes you to another world. And it gives you a little tune to carry in your head. Something to take you away from the dreary horrors of the real world. A little something for when you're feeling blue. You know?"

Great memory to cherish, SeanMartin!

My PACIFIC OVERTURES memory stems from the original company's OOT tryout in Boston (the Colonial, I think) before coming in to NY. At that point the show had an early joke-free (and kinda boring) version of the song "Chrysanthemum Tea", and the company sang "Next" in blue jeans and street clothes since the black and white costumes hadn't arrived yet. Sean, since you're into the details of set design (as I am), you'd appreciate that we in Boston did get to see the parade down the hanamichi of the steam-punkish set-pieces representing the American gifts to the Japanese that show up in the great Boris Aronson book.

I've always loved nearly every bit of this score, but I must admit that that first view of the full play onstage practically put me to sleep, particularly during the tedious developments in Act II. And Lordy, that "Welcome to Kanagawa" song was mirthless then and remains mirthless now. Would love to see if Mr. Doyle can finally make that number come to life.

For those who were asking about an extension, the show has now been extended through June 11.
