Pacific Overtures Revival

Was it a limited engagment? I listend to the revival recording last night and its a very very good recording. I know the original production flopped and it is a hard show to sell but it seems like it could have a had a small decent run. Did it flop terrible and close or play a limited engagment?

I'm pretty sure it was a limited engagement that the Roundabout did.

re: Pacific Overtures Revival

I went to see it. I saw it right before it closed and the theatre was empty. So I'd say it was a flop. Anyways, i did have someone next to me who woke me up while clapping. It was the 1st time in my life i have ever fallen asleep while seeing a Broadway show. Not the 1st time i felt like sleeping, though.

re: Pacific Overtures Revival

It was not a flop, it was a limited run like most shows of the Roundabout. I enjoyed it very much. It had a stellar Asian cast including B.D.Wong and Michael Lee.

It was very well done and the singing was excellent, so excellent it landed a recording which was recorded the day after it closed, not an easy feat for a limited run show.

re: Pacific Overtures Revival

I liked it, too. I know a lot of the people who didn't were comparing it to earlier productions, none of which I had seen.

Thats what I had thought because the show doesnt ever seem to do well. But this had a recording and 3PO didnt so I figured it was limited.

As I understand it from prior posts, the OBC/OBCR had a much bigger orchestra, though the lyrics were not as clear as in the revival.

Next is a stunning finale on the revival cd. It must have been awsome to see live.

Next was a mess in the revival. It looked like a gay-asian disco on crack. There were some lovely moments, but most of the production had a very regional feel to it. I found it quite underwhelming at best.

re: Pacific Overtures Revival

I thoroughly enjoyed it, given that NY will probably not see another revival of this in some time (after all, a Sondheim revival is not all THAT common).

I don't think it was a flop at all, but Roundabout has a tendency to make some of their limited runs (which most of the productions are given their non-profit subscription series) that are well received (or at least difficult to get tickets to), into more open ended runs (or constant extensions). They did the same with their production of Follies. And would have tried to do with Pajama Game.

re: Pacific Overtures Revival

NOTE: Things cannot technically be flops when they are put on by non-profit organizations like Roundabout! They can sell poorly, however, this wasn't so much a big deal. Look at the capacity stats

It certainly did not fail, it brought new stunning life to a show that is very obscure and otherwise, probably would not have been seen again like it was here. We were very lucky to have it, I enjoyed the show and the recording preserves it beautifully. Next did seem a little misguided and I agree about the gay asian disco feel. However, listening to it is quite thrilling and the staging was very interesting. Plus, a full perimeter stream/pond around the stage is just amazing.

re: Pacific Overtures Revival

Though the concept came from a Lincoln Center Festival production by the director that was done in the round, at Avery Fisher Hall, and done in Japanese, which is a wonderful subversion almost, of the piece. I would have loved to have seen that.

I had a history teacher that didn't like musicals in general but loved Pacific Overtures.

I recent;y saw a series of photos from the Licoln Center Festival Production that were BREATHTAKINGLY beautiful.

AAAANNND once again Muscle proves how ignorant he is. You fell asleep duing a modern musical masterpiece like Pacific Overtures and you continue to pimp the hell out of dreck like Bombay Dreams. I've said it before and I will say it again. Muscle you liked Bombay Dreams, therefore none of your opinions are valid.

I'm so happy that I got to see the Roundabout revival and have Mr. B. D Wong sign my program and pose with me and some friends. :)

re: Pacific Overtures Revival

The show itself is brilliant and I think its almost so brilliant that even now it is still ahead of its time.

I wonder what Mako (may he R.I.P) thought of this production.

re: Pacific Overtures Revival

I enjoyed it immensely, and even saw it twice. The second time was when Lincoln Center Library was taping it for posterity. Both times I was completely absorbed. I've also seen a DVD of the original floating around that was fascinating, and made me sorry I missed the original. What a great year that was...Pacific Overtures, A Chorus Line, Chicago and Treemonisia! That year caused me to fall in love with the stage.

re: Pacific Overtures Revival

I loved the Roundabout PACIFIC OVERTURES; I saw it twice in one week. The cast was quite outstanding, especially vocally, and it was very special to see Sab Shimono switch over to Lord Abe and to see Alvin Ing re-create the Shogun's Wife.

re: Pacific Overtures Revival

I loved this production as well.

Although, if you sat in the orchestra (at the time still tables) you missed out on alot. The balcony seats were the best. From there you could see that the set was floating on a lake and the entire theatre was a ship.
