Parsifal at the Met

Hey, all --

I know it's unorthodox to ask this here, but perhaps someone can help. Planning on rushing this tomorrow. Do I need to get there any earlier than 11am if tickets go on sale at 4pm for a 6pm performance?

Also - at this point, don't have anyone to go with. If there's anyone interested in seeing it but can't camp out, I believe you can get TWO $20 tickets. You can meet me later. Holler!

I would say yes. There are far fewer tickets set aside for rush for this production than normal.

Hoo-boy.... Okay. We'll see what happens in the morning. If I get there and it's looking unlikely, I might just see if I can get into ANN's first preview. Thanks!

Completely false. There are always 200 rush tickets for weekday performances.

The rush line forms downstairs in the Concourse vestibule outside Founder's Hall. If you enter through the box office, go down the steps, through the doors on the right, walk straight through the next set of doors, and a right when you see the glass doors.

That said, this "Parsifal" has always been one of the most anticipated productions of the season and has already gotten some terrific response, so I'm imagining that the demand will be greater than usual for rush and the earlier the better.

I contented myself with a side Family Circle seat for $40 after fees (going on the 27th - and I'm ferociously excited about it) since I don't want to risk not seeing it. Also, I don't love the sound under the overhang at the back of the orchestra - I'd really rather sit up high where the sound reverberates.

But "Parsifal" is far and away the production I'm most excited about this season, Broadway or otherwise. I'll be curious to hear what folks think, particularly other musical/opera crossover fans.

I was commenting off of the poster's assertion that today's performance would have less than 200 rush tickets. On a weeknight, there are either 200 rush tickets or no rush tickets. The weekend rush is contingent on availability. The only First Night's that do no have rush tickets are Opening Night, the Fall Gala (Ballo this season), New Year's Eve (Stuarda), and the Spring Gala (which will be Cesare). This season's Ring Cycle will have rush tickets.

Nice to know that there will be rush for the "Ring" this year. Any idea if it will be twice the normal price, as "Ring" tickets normally are?

I stood for "Walküre" this Spring (and paid something like $45 for the privilege - by far my most expensive-ever standing spot) but I've finally reached the point where I simply can't stand for a whole Wagner anymore and I didn't really appreciate the third act like I know I can. I'd love to try for a seat for any of the four this year.

Frogs...as usual...is 100% correct. (Aside: we should meet for a drink before a performance at the Met...I am an opera DEVOTEE but you always seem to know the ins-and-outs of the place better than anyone on this board!)

All I can say to the OP is that I hope you got in and enjoyed the show...I've been to at least a hundred performances at the Met (having only been a regular to this house for the past 7 or 8 years). That said, I have never previously been so moved by a performance at the Met more so than I was last Friday night. I'm still walking on air thinking about it

Gatti's performances with the awesome Met orchestra rivals all visiting conductors (from Muti to Rattle) and may have even surpassed dearly beloved maestro Levine. I for one can't think of a single performance where Levine conducted without a score...Wagner no less! I miss the maestro and I hope he returns to form next season...but I would not object if Gatti inherited any of his commitments at the Met next season, should the need arise.

I love watching maestros conduct a piece they clearly love. I did a production of Carmen a number of years ago with Maestro Coppola, and watching him lead the orchestra without once referring to the score was just a pleasure. I would make sure that I could see him in the backstage monitor as much as I could, especially for the "les voici. voici la quadrille" section of Act IV.

I've never seenParsifal onstage, but it sounds like I'm going to have to catch this production.
