She's never stopped singing it before for that reason. Singing his song that she made famous doesn't mean she is interacting with him as a person."
I haven't heard her sing this song in quite some time, but in any event, the article states that the Grammy performance will be "a special tribute to legendary composers Andrew Lloyd Webber and Leonard Bernstein". I still think it's curious at best (and perhaps even hypocritical) that Ms. LuPone would involve herself in any tribute to ALW.
It makes sense to me.
This is not a TV program dedicated to honoring ALW - it's the Grammys. This particular segment is just a blip in an entire evening of entertainment having nothing to do with ALW or Bernstein, save for those few minutes.
I can easily see how (because it's The Grammys being celebrated - not an entire evening dedicated to honoring ALW) Ms. Lupone recognizes a difference. When I think about it, that singular song is going to be more about seeing Patti Lupone perform than honoring ALW.
Was he even invited to be there? WILL he be there? dunno...
And let's be real here - as others have pointed out, the choice of "honoring" ALW and Leonard Bernstein, in the same breath, is pretty random. The two have so very little in common.
It seems more likely to me that this "tribute" is really just someone's idea for what might make an awards show more interesting to watch, for a few minutes.
I am excited to watch this...yet am also unenthused about LuPone and Platt singing anything from West Side Story.
The wording in a different article made it sound as if LuPone were singing it as a way to welcome the Grammy's to NYC and not as part of this tribute which I thought was interesting. Maybe it was a bait and switch to get her involved.

That was what I understood from the Grammys press release, that it was a welcome back to New York and not specifically a tribute to ALW.

That would make Ms. LuPone's involvement much more logical.
Ben sounds great with this more popish arrangement... https://twitter.com/bensplattupd/status/957159351415902208
I still think he wasn’t the right choice to be doing this, though.
