According to O GLOBO,the most important newspaper in South America, after Madonna and Elton John,Patti Luponne will be in Rio de Janeiro for a big concert next May,for an audience of 100.000 people in the biggest Brazilian Arena (a soccer stadium).
This will be great for the Brazilian production of GYPSY which will open very soon. And for all Brazilian fans of Miss Luponne (her Evita album was number one in the Brazilian Charts). My brother lives in Brazil and is very excited !You will love Brazil Miss Lu Ponne !

So, I read a bunch of books about Eva Peron when the show first came out and in death, she was not the most popular woman in South America.
What is her current status in her native land?

"So, I read a bunch of books about Eva Peron when the show first came out and in death, she was not the most popular woman in South America.

Somewhere between Shakira and Carmen Miranda, I would guess.

I can add a true history:I've visited Argentina so many times and found shrines and portrait of EViTA in Restaurants,Theatres,Schools, even in newstands in the streets.
He is the most popular south american woman until today.

Please,do not compare Shakira with Carmen Miranda if you visit Brasil. The love all Brazilians have for Miranda is almost the same all Argentina has for Evita.

They are all coke snorting whores who like to shake their money makers. Carmen just had a little more class.

Eva Peron is a very polarizing figure in Argentina (much like LuPone is in the theater community).

The people who love her basically canonize her, the people who do not consider her to be a representation of the worst times of Argentinian history.

It all depends on who you talk to and what side of the poverty line they (or their relatives) lived on during Peron's reign.

That's why I said land, not country.

"He is the most popular woman in South America today"
Gotta love that typo!

Check out Carmen Miranda in the movie "Doll Face" sometime - she is beyond hysterical. The movie iteself was written by "Louise Hovick," also known as the incomparable Miss Gypsy Rose Lee!

I have a DVD of a wonderful production of CARMEN MIRANDA-O MUSICAL,shot in Rio.
I guess this would be a wonderful subject for a Broadway production, don`t you think so? Her life was a kind of Cinderella story with touches of Janis Joplin (at the end).

Not to question this information but, to an audience of 100,000 people? Really, a soccer stadium?

Well, I don't think Carmen Miranda is nearly loved in Brazil as Evita is in Argentina. Eva Perón is a real icon, and I remember that when the Evita movie was released there was such a huge protest that they had to interrupt the premiere and it was forbidden in thaters for a long time... I've never been in Argentina, but many friends of mine who did say that she's a political figure like the many "populistas" who governed a lot of countries in Latin America (in Brazil the figure compared to what Evita is to Argentina would be former president Getúlio Vargas). On the other hand, being Carmen Miranda restricted to the entertaining world, she doesn't have that kind of influence these days. Of course she was a big figure at her time, but that was it. I haven't seen a single brazilian who identifies himself/herself with Carmen Miranda.

You must be very young.
Brazilians above 50 have Miranda as an Icon.A huge biography of Miranda (by Rui Castro) in now being translated in several languages.Of course,Brazilians do not have in politics the same PASSION as Argentians have. You will not find a portrait of Getulio Vargas anywhere in Brazil. But if you turn your TV on,you certainly find in some show or motion picture a reference to Miranda everyday. If you are from Brazil I understand. As I said, you must be very, very young.By the way Luponne is going to sing at a four thousand seats house.
