Reminder me of an even more absurd After Hours: man has singular goal to get to a location but is thwarted at every opportunity by increasingly ludicrous obstacles. If you're not on its wavelength, it's gonna be a long 3 hours. I had a good time going along on the journey, not too concerned about where I was being taken and enjoying the off-beat comedy. I'm not sure I see a world where Patti gets major awards attention, whether she deserves it or not.

She was on WWHL last night.
Who is a better guest than Patti....TV GOLD!
I think most likely is NY Critics Circle or something. But it's coming out very early in the season, so that hurts its chances. Major awards less likely since it's such a polarizing film.

Finally caught this today. One of the most bonkers film experiences of my life. I was in a pretty full house, and not one of us left our seats until midway through the credits. Also featured a cameo that I never thought I'd see:
Anyone else catch the voice of the Rabbi on the video that plays when Beau finally gets home? It was DAVID FREAKING MAMET.
Lup1 would never get an Oscar nod. She has no ability to be gracious or tactful. She talked trashed during the entire Tony season she was nominated for Company including insulting US audiences. Hollywood doesn’t go for that.
Such a well acted performance. I think it’s about time Patti had the opportunity to have a prestigious major Hollywood leading role hopefully soon and win an Oscar. She really is peaking in her career later in life.

You really think she is peaking? I’d disagree. Booking jobs isn’t necessarily peaking. The only person who hires her is Ryan Murphy and the parts she gets from him are painfully bad and she plays them all like a caricature. Her overacting could peel paint off the walls.
Andy Cohen exploits her. She is his favorite type of guest. He goads her because she will say anything and gets his show in the press. I feel bad she is so gullible.
I’d say Linda Lavin is actually peaking at almost 90. CBS consistently hires her for sitcom work. Chuck Lorre writes parts for her that are diverse and show her range. he’s writing another show for her since B Positive was cancelled. She narrates several audiobooks a year. She keeps challenging herself with theatre and wowed audiences with the avant-garde “You Will Get Sick.” Annaleigh wants to find a play for them to do together.

This is thread is literally about a film she's in and she's about to film a Marvel Series. Murphy has nothing to do with either.
We get it, you don't like her. Why go on a thread about her then?
Lol BJR your quote makes it seem like I said it :'(.

Idk, I just loved her in this film and if there was ever overacting it was fully appropriate for the moment/film. But even in this film I think it was the subtext of her facial expressions when she wasn't speaking that really got me. I felt like I was truly watching the character rather than watching 'Patti LuPone' as it sometimes feels like. Whereas for example I must admit I'm finding it harder and harder to watch Bernadette on screen these days and I say that as her biggest fan.

IMO she peaked almost 40 years ago, with Anything Goes. That is not to say that she did not have other highpoints. I never saw Gypsy (honestly, I was just Gypsy’ed out) but I thought she should have won the Tony over Bette, for War Paint. I think it is a little hyperbolic to say she is peaking now (because the Broadway legend is getting more film work???).
No I mean the quality of her work....I mean, I didn't see her in Anything Goes but based on that Tony performance and her diction can we really say that she was peaking then in terms of talent? I think her acting has got stronger, her diction improved, her voice remained strong. Between Sweeney Todd, Gypsy, War Paint, Company and a few good TV/Film roles (e.g. this one) Patti continues to impress me (whereas I think Bernadette's best days were probably the 80s and 90s).
In any case, it's fine if you don't agree I'm not really trying to convince anyone of anything except express the happiness I find from Patti LuPone.
I finally saw it. It’s a movie I loved deeply and yet hope not to see again for a decade or so. Either Ari Aster is your bag, or not. I can’t imagine many people feeling differently about this film than they did about Midsommar; it’s very much the same instincts turned up a notch or two.
Patti is great, but my takeaway is that Zoe Lister-Jones is the real revelation. I’ve always liked her but the power and menace and unsavory sexuality she brings here made me want to see her in a starring vehicle soon.
