No, he's not dead, but retiring. So many wonderful contributions to his craft.


I think my favorite film would have to be The Lion in Winter.

One of the best actors of his time and an absolute legend. So sad about the news and the fact that he remains Academy Awards biggest acting loser with 8 nominations and 0 wins.
I also hope it's not because of illness.

Thank you Sir for all your wonderful and timeless contributions to the film and theater worlds! Brava!

I remember seeing "Lawrence of Arabia" for the first time when the restored version played at the Ziegfeld. My jaw dropped the first time he appeared on screen. He was absolutely mesmerizing.

Dramamamma, I love "Lion in Winter" as well. One of my favorite films (and performances).

Something else is not being said. Plummer is still going strong and he was a big carouser who eventually sobered up too. .. Still, he's had his innings so no grumbles just thanks for some wonderful performances.

I still think THE STUNT MAN is one of his greatest films and performances. According to Wiki, it was never widely released and most Americans never saw it.

A crime, if you ask me.

I was fortunate to see O'Toole as Henry Higgins in PYGMALION on Broadway decades ago, and he was brilliant, an actor who could be brittle one moment and sympathetic the next, irritating and funny and determined and impossible, and make it all seem perfectly natural. His Lawrence of Arabia was a force of nature, and his portrayal of Jack in THE RULING CLASS was imaginative and frightening. Perhaps he will write something?
