I totally understand where your coming from. Prices are sky high all around from putting ON a production to PAYING to go see one. I know that the bottom line is to make the investment back to justify the time, expense, blood, sweat and tears that it took to mount the production in the first place. I totally get that. It's just disheartening is all. I'm seeing a whole lot of mediocre and not a lot of WOW.
Well that, we TOTALLY agree on. Trust me.
Most of what I see, in my opinion falls between "poor" and "adequate." Few productions are "WOW," but the ones that are, stick with you forever.
I guess we've got to take the good with the bad.
"Bernadette is not a household name. She may have been brilliant in GYPSY (that's not even the point), but she sure as hell didn't sell tickets"
What????????
I know it's been 7 years but the 2003 revival had a HUGE advance and sold exceptionally well from the time it opened in April 2003 through the new year. During the high tourist season there seemed to be announcements every week they were breaking box office records at The Shubert. You can find the numbers somewhere on the web. Probably on this site. Ticket sales seriously dropped off after the holidays and they had a rough time for the last 5 months and yes, they did close at a loss but lots of very well selling shows close at a loss if they can't sustain the production for at least a couple of years. And she kept Annie Get Your Gun going for 2 years and I believe they announced they recouped after only one year. Of course that was a much more family and tourist friends show but I think you can attribute a majority of those tickets sales of both those shows to the name recognition and box office draw of Bernadette Peters. Just look at the weeks of Gypsy when she was on vacation. They plummetted.
I'm not going to get tied up in the who is more famous argument. I think it really depends on who you talk to and what segments of entertainment they follow. And an Oscar can only take you so far and only means so much. Cuba Gooding, Jr. anyone?

Catherine Zeta Joes is more famous that Cuba Gooding, Jr.
LOL Well that I will agree with. Just using him as an example that Oscars don't necessarily mean that much. I definitely think CZJ is decently known but what is she known for? She has only had a couple of popular movies during her career- I'm thinking the Zorro movies, Chicago and maybe Traffic but I'm not sure many people know her from the movie unless they saw it. And I don't mean to trivialize her career but much like some people only know Bernadette as that woman who dated Steve Martin for years, I'm sure there is a significant number who know Catherine as that woman who is married to Michael Douglas.

I don't care who opened the show, I'm just gutted they recorded it with CZJ's weak/timid vocals and not Bernadette's outstanding vocal chops and incomparable interpretation of a lyric.

Maybe a Facebook campaign could make a new recording happen!
They should at least record "Send In the Clowns" and "Liaisons" and release them on iTunes or preferably an EP of Bernie and Strich singing some of the songs to sell at the merchandise stand!
Elaine Stritch looks pretty bad in those photos...
And moljul, if you think Bernadette Peters is a household name, you're delusional.
That said, she's one of my favorites and I'll see her do anything. Her Mama Rose was one of the best performances I have ever seen. But still, that doesn't change the fact that people from across the country are not going to flock to NYC to see her in a musical.
Stritch looks like a deer in headlights in these photos:
Stritch looks like she's going to punch the photographer.
Bernadette Peters looks AMAZING. Elaine Stritch LOL!~ - where are these photos FROM?
(edit: I see the press release)
Bernadette does look amazing....she's stunning.
What a hilarious and great interview.

Oh my GOD. This is just AMAZING. Bernadette looks ridiculously, ridiculously, good. Elaine Stritch is SUCH a character. I love when she says, "And they both have great humour" so dead-pan, blowing her nose while Bernadette is speaking, flicking her hair, and quoting Liaisons.
It is a great interview. I love how deeply Elaine Stritch has thought about the role.

Good God, they are going to be wonderful.
I'm encouraged by Elaine's early insights into the character, specifically the function of humour and cruelty in their relationship.
Love. It.
I'm sure CZJ was just brought in to create a huge buzz and get seats filled. Producers most likely thought Peters would bring back the theatre crowd.
p.s.
Anyone else want Stritch's sunglasses?^^^
All I have to say is: BERNADETTE PETERS IS A GODDESS!!!
Great interview.
I love how Peters looks horrified through most of it.
Interesting tidbit...according to Peters, Elaine signed on before her.

As there's very little chance of them doing another cast recording, I hope they go one better and film the Peters/Strich version; either for DVD or PBS Classics.
This production is going to be PHENOMENAL!!!
Is it just me, or...
By the way, I hated this revival, but I am definitely going again just to see Peters and Stritch!
