Did anyone else notice the small edited Phantom piece was terrible. I was embarrassed by it.

It was extremly short and uneccesary. Plus it just plain sucked...

didn't he start to sing the entire song ... miss a few beats ... and then sing the tacked on ending?

It was exactly how it's going to be sung in the 90 minute Las Vegas production.
hahaha

Oh please god no!
I thought it was perfect that after BSM's intro of "and now from the longest running show in Broadway history..." they still couldn't get it right. It was really pathetic.

poor guy.
although it was amusing.
and gotham, that made my night
The orchestra actually cut the second part of the first verse... apparently without Howard McGillin's knowledge! He stopped for a second, then switched to the bridge and picked it up.
Either he forgot about the cut... or they neglected to rehearse it enough to make it smooth.
Either way, it was an unfortunate "oops" on live TV.
Personally, I liked the "fake Evita" and her big bulky bracelets sliding up her arms.

You know what really sucks?
Howard McGillin got into all that makeup for about 30 seconds of screen time.
Hopefully, they didn't do all of the makeup; just an abriged version for television audiences.

Maybe next time he'll take a page from the Gerard Butler makeup book and use a bigger mask.

I didn't find the Phantom bit nearly as embarrassing as the poor people who had to make up that Hal Prince assembly line. I felt particularly awful for Sweeney Todd and that one girl who looked like she could be from Forum OR West Side.
OMG, I about died when I saw it. First of all I didn't enjoy him in Phantom when I saw it years ago and then seeing him screw up. I do feel sorry cause no one wants that to ever happen.
I loved the line he messed up, "touch me.." and then to the end of the song. And why did they do like a 30 second song? They should have let the cast do something longer.

Yeah, that Hal Prince assembly line was horrible.
And how did they choose the shows for the assembly line? Were Company, Follies, and Candide included?
Never has a tribute from the Tony's looked more like a bad sequence from the Oscars than this one.
Haha. Yeah I'd agree. It was...interesting and strange, to say the least.
Maybe they would have put a little more effort into the sequence had Prince hopped on a jet for that long 2 hr flight to recieve the award in person. He snubbed them a bit, and I think they snubbed back.
Yeah that was strange that he wasn't there. I think he should have been there and then just fly out ASAP if he needed to.

I agree that something went on without Howard noticing. I just watched it again, and Mitchell was actually still introducting them as the music began the "floating, falling" bit. Thus, Howard came in with "Floating, falling," when he should have sung "Touch me, trust me..." With all the intro stuff I doubt if he heard it. Looks like this one wasn't Howard's fault - the timing with Mitchell was ridiculous.

It is a 6 hour flight pratically from Vegas to NYC. And trust me Hal is very busy here.
Oh, please, there's no damned excuse for Prince's absence. They knew way in advance, and his return might've been for 48 hours maximum. It was pitiful -- a phoned in thanks for lifetime achievement? He wasn't in the hospital; he was trying to open that Phantom for Dummies in Vegas. (I keep thinking there's a chandelier ride included). A low in an already pitiful show.
Yeah, a six hour flight.... in the Wright Brothers plane. They have these things nowadays called jets, and I hear that the famous folks have access to them, even in obsolete Vegas. And by saying Hal " is very busy here, trust me," you make it sound as if you are a personal friend and valet to Mr. Prince. Puhlease..another person living an internet fantasy.
