In his most recent book, I think Laurents said something about using the women as a gimmick...I think to divert the attention of the audience from the fact that they were watching a bunch of drag performers, which was controversial at the time, or something. I could be wrong.
I think these Cagelles looks a lot more Manly than any of those in the original. Plus, these certainly have ugly wigs. I think that's part of the problem.
Edna Turnblad:
I think that's an example of this revival's motif of "less grandeur". They wanted that cheap, seedy drag look in comparison to the glitzy glamour of Cagelles past.
To the poster concerned about Harvey "croaking" the score: I was actually really surprised when I saw him play Tevye. I thought, man, I don't know if I can handle that voice singing the part of Tevye. However, I was really won over buy the end of the show. His acting and his dancing were so good that my assessment of his singing voice being "not that attractive" did not matter.
I was thinking the 2 leads' wigs look well fitted, and the boa photo of Harvey- well, he must be pleased!
The grey wig makes Tambor look like Blake from Dynasty!
So where are the pictures of Wilson Jermaine Heredia as Jacob?
I was thinking Harvey looked like a glammed-up Sylvia Fine.
But I adore him. I'm sure he'll be fantastic.

I thought that too.
Almost certainly deliberate considering John Barrowman had the Krystle wig in London, and the other soap references therein.

What's funny is that we've heard weeks of yammering that Harvey is not believable as a drag star in a cabaret despite the fact that for several years, Harvey made his living as the drag star in a cabaret.
Has Harvey lost weight?
I have always been perplexed abut the extra-butch Cagelles in this production. None of them looks like a drag queen. And yet, that's clearly the look the show was going for. I mean, the costumes for the title song are designed so that every time they leap, their chests are exposed. It's distracting, and I don't understand it, per se, but for some reason it doesn't bother me. Much like it doesn't make ANY sense that Jacob just stumbled in from the Bronx but I keep laughing anyway.
For me, this production just gets enough right that I look at the things that clearly don't fit, acknowledge them, and move on. While at the same time I know if the production as a whole had won me over less, I'd be bitching about them endlessly.
Regardless, I'm stupidly excited to see Harvey in this role. My expectation is that he'll get maximum laughs, nail the more emotional moments, and...um...probably sound like hell. But I'll be smiling the whole time. What can I say? I love him.
And he really DOES look like Sylvia Fine glammed up. Brilliant call!

i actaully think that these photos are great! im excited for them joining the show
PopAria, that is the most ignorant response I've read on this board all day.
Both Harvey and Jeffrey are very well respected and talented performers. I'll say that more people would probably know who Kelsey Grammer is over Jeffrey Tambor, but do you think the general public would know who the hell Douglas Hodge is over Harvey Fierstein? I don't think so. And still, with Hodge and Grammer in the show, it still isn't A-List.
In that orange wig he looks like Madame Medusa from The Rescuers.
Harve looks amazing and Tambor looks, well, almost handsome.
Is that a young Pone bottom right in the group shot?
I'm sort of excited to see them in this. Despite his croaky voice, I think Harvey will bring a lot more pathos to the part than Hodge, who I just did not care for.
I actually can't wait to hear what Harvey sounds like.
And why'd my post get removed? I didn't think I said anything worse than what some people are saying about other shows on this board.

I still think it should have been Dale Hensley who took over.

DING DING DING!!!
We have a winner!
PopAria - Harvey's recording of "I Am What I Am" is on youtube.
It actually looks like Tambor has lost weight - Harvey looks the same.

Me three. First thing I thought.
When I did a version of LaCage at the Candlewood Playhouse back in ...er...1996 (?) we had the most BEAUTIFUL Cagelles ever! Very handsome young men who weren't much for the gym, mostly skinny, but just beautiful. I would have encouraged all of them to audition for the Radio City Rockettes!! At the time I remember thinking to myself, "Why are we using two women in our show when you truly can't tell the difference?" It wasn't until the end that the bow was staged as such that the audience gave terrific applause because they saw that the ensemble was made up of both men and women. They loved it! I guess because by the end of the show they were expecting all the dancers to be men and to discover that there were actually two women in there was kind of the "Mary Sunshine" moment where things aren't always what they seem to be.
I agree with Jon, Georges would have NEVER been seen bald in public -- I love Jeffrey Tambor's wig
When I look at that picture, I find it very touching. I see a vulnerability in Georges and his vanity that makes me smile
I hope to see this again, and I'm excited about Harvey too -- I think he'll be great for this part
Harvey looks ace, but I thought Tambor looked like his head had been added on to someone else's body in one of the shots...

Glad I saw Douglas and Kelsey---I think I'll skip this cast change. (Harvey was great as Edna---but this one......)
