Yes, he does. I'm not sure if I'm feeling it. I always pictured the Man in the Mask to be more mysterious.... this I imagine him to start singing Tommy. I also feel like they used elements from the musical (style wise)... maybe it's the quality... yeah...

They've definitely borrowed some sylistic elements from the musical, I feel.

You guys do know that there's not much difference between Spring Awakening and Spring's Awakening, as far as time period is concerned, right?

It's the same show. I'm not sure what you were expecting...

Ew. This looks really bad.

"I don't see that many plays, and for me, musicals are rarely pleasing. I feel the actors are being put through a kind of nightmarish labor. They're like animals being forced to pull heavy carts of vegetables at incredible speeds." --- Wallace Shawn

I'd love to see a performance of the play. It's so beautifully written that it's hard to picture it performed and spoken.

Not really how I pictured the Man in the Mask...

"You have two kinds of shows on Broadway – revivals and the same kind of musicals over and over again, all spectacles. You get your tickets for The Lion King a year in advance, and essentially a family... pass on to their children the idea that that's what the theater is – a spectacular musical you see once a year, a stage version of a movie. It has nothing to do with theater at all. It has to do with seeing what is familiar.... I don't think the theatre will die per se, but it's never going to be what it was.... It's a tourist attraction." Stephen Sondheim

Am I the only one that thinks it looked kinda cool?

I saw this LA production over the 4th of July weekend. It's actually really good. Definitely NOT anything like the musical - except of course it's the same basic story. Excellent actors. It's darker and edgier than the musical. More of a comedy in the first act. Speaking as someone who absolutely loves the musical, I was happy to see this adaptation of the original play. It is well done, and kind of adds to the experience of seeing the musical.

I found this review in LA Weekly...

As good as the production might be, I think the story loses something when the cast is comprised of actors 5-10 years older than the characters they're playing.

something I found extremely interesting when I was putting this together. I did a search for the original german title and one of the top results was an NY Times review from a 1917 (while Wedekind was still alive) production of the play that some hack translated into English. Among those in attendance at this press opening was Emma Goldman- to give a little context as to how long ago this was! It is quite possibly one of the most negative reviews I've ever read, and I've little doubt this particular version was garbage. Who would have guessed where the piece would wind up 90 years later?

How can you think it looks bad based on pictures? You do realize the same things were probably said when Sheik and Sater said 'Let's make this a musical?'

Matt, that review from 1917 is fascinating. Thanks for posting it.
