Piazza or DRS?

#0Piazza or DRS?

I am going to be in NYC mid-January. Most of my show schedule is already booked, but I have one Wednesday matinee time where I haven't picked a show yet. I've narrowed it down to Piazza and DRS.

Kelli will be gone from Piazza by then.

John will be gone from DRS. Sherie Rene Scott is rumored to be leaving shortly after my visit (though I don't think she's confirmed anything), and of course Norbert just extended so he should be in.

I am very torn. I've never seen either show. I want to see Piazza mostly for the show, though I'm sad Kelli will be gone.

My main draw to DRS is Sherie Rene and Norbert.

Opinions?

I loved Dirty ROtten Scoundels. I thought it was musical comedy at it's best. I've never laughed so hard at song lyrics, ever. Great performances.

Piazza, however, changed my life. Stunning and beautiful, I was transported in a way theatre has never transported me before. Just simply stunning. Though-for me-a lot of that had to do with O'Hara-who I think was/is the backbone of the show.

Either way-whichever choice you make- you'll have a gret time at both.

I loved DRS. I hated Piazza.

DRS is funny, big elaborate set and costumes, great show.

Piazza is an italian opera that is just not my tastes (though most people on the board here love it).

I guess it depends upon what style musical you are looking for.

Watch the BWW videos and see which you like better.

Oh and FYI-Sherie is def. leaving January 31st. She has another show she's going into.

I'm a bigger fan of "fun and silly" musicals - The Producers is my favorite show if that helps put my opinion in perspective. I saw DRS and Piazza within a couple days of each other. While I absolutely loved Piazza and would not hesitate to go back and see it again if given the chance, I adored DRS and actually took my parents to see it just a week later. I'm dying to go back and see it again (wanted to this weekend, but sadly it was sold out). I didn't see John either time but his understudy was superb. I did get to see Kelli and she was great as well.

If you're into fun musicals with catchy lyrics that are pretty much just "fluff" then I'd say go with DRS. If you're into a moving love story with a lot of heart and soul, then Piazza would probably be a better choice.

Given the chance I'd personally choose DRS, but that is solely my opinion and really depends on what type of musical you tend to like more.

What's funny to me is that liotte and I both love ALL SHOOK UP, but I am the complete opposite when it comes to DRS vs PIAZZA. :) I loved PIAZZA, but didn't like DRS as much. I didn't hate it, but I saw it only because of Sherie and Norbert, who certainly didn't disappoint. It really is all about personal preference.

Ditto on liotte's advice: Watch the videos.

I basically agree with everything ProducersFan said. I loved both immensely, but Dirty Rotten Scoundrels is more my style of show.

THere's also the fact that DRS and its style have been and will be repeated on Broadway for years. Piazza is a gem-and unlikely to be around for much longer, or be repeated.

PIAZZA. No contest.

Well, I love Piazza, but I absolutely adore DRS and perhaps biasly would say that. Honestly, you can't go wrong w/ either. It probably comes down to personal taste, though I enjoy most shows and some that aren't my taste surprise me. I too encourage going w/ the video previews. However, to shill DRS a bit, if it's mid-January then both Norbert and Sherie should be in, unless an illness comes up, and I am very excited for Jonathan Pryce to take over for Lithgow, and I don't think you'll be disappointed.

I feel that DRS while funny doesn't hold a candle to the beautiful melodies in Piazza. but I will take beautiful lush melodies over funny comedy anyday.

go to see Piazza....DRS is a bad bad show, the songs are terrible....the plot is awful, just bad.

I also say Piazza, it is a unique experience. DRS is going to tour and is a fun show with great performances though. You can't go wrong with either. (unless you are like muscle23, his experience is a minority)

I stand corrected, you are as vapid as they say.

I disagree with the opinion that DRS is a bad show at all. It's a great musical comedy. The second best from last season (the best going to Spelling Bee). And the lyrics are quite clever.

Having said that, though, I've seen DRS twice. Piazza, 4 times going on 5....

I loved both Piazza and DRS. They were my two favorite shows from last season. Do you want a big, flashy, funny and sometimes bawdy musical? Or - would you rather see a beautiful show filled with a soaring score, lovely sets, great lighting...more of a period piece / love story?

These shows are both wonderful - but are Apples and Oranges. If asked, which one would I see again first, I'd choose "Piazza".

DRS is a guarenteed good time- Norbert is fabulous and the show is just so much fun! ALITP is a beautiful show but i found it to be a bit long and drawn out so i would recommend DRS

PIAZZA = Highly overated, pretty to look at, but a possible snoozefest depending on your likes or dislikes.

DRS = A good time that will make you laugh...and if it doesnt, lighten up! The show is a hysterical riot that is sure to please!

Easy for me DIRTTY ROTTEN hands down!

this is a tough call but I'm gonna vote for PIAZZA. Beautiful, touching and funny...DRS is hilarious fun but not really emotional.

DRS. can't really say that I hate Piazza, but I have listened to the music and I have to say that i don;t like it. DRS is clever, witty, better than the movie, and if you want to see DRS for Norbert, he is SO worth it. He totally deserved Tony for best Actor.

but, it;s really up to you.

I say Piazza. I've seen both shows twice, and by watching DRS for the second time, I saw many flaws and boring points in the show (I was dozing off), it was much less enjoyable than I thought it to be. Plus, DRS isn't pretty to look at, a very mediocre and sometimes ugly design in my opinion. Piazza, in every aspect, is a beautiful show and production. It looks, sounds, and is beautiful. Go see that one.
