Hey all! My family is in town this week and my 21 year old brother wants to see a show, preferably a play. He's not a theatre person but wants to see something kinda special, I've pretty much seen everything on Broadway right now and the two shows I thought he might like, Macbeth or The Big Knife, I really don't feel like seeing again. Anyone have some off or off off Broadway suggestions for something a bro might like?
Well currently there aren't any great off broadway plays but there is Peter and the Starcathcer. That's really the only one I would suggest because I think Buyer and Cellar just closed but if it didn't go see that!
My top picks are The Nance and Sleep No More, but both would require a particularly adventurous brother who likes musicals more than your brother seems to. I second the vote for Peter and the Starcatcher, but even that one trades on some great musical theater moments.
I'm gonna be no help at all, but given your description, the first show that came to my mind was War Horse. DANG! That show should just be a staple and never close...
But for "something different" and for "a bro", I might offer "Silence! The Musical".
You also might look into:
"The Accidental Pervert" (how does your brother feel about porn?)

EDIT: I didn't think to ask about YOUR preferences (or your gender/age for that matter). Perhaps "The Accidental Pervert" might be a completely inappropriate suggestion...

It doesn't seem like your brother is gay so I don't know why you would want him to see BUYER & CELLAR (which is opening back up at Barrow St). Unless he is a big fan of the most boring thing you'll ever see then I wouldn't suggest THE BIG KNIFE. VANYA isn't really something a 21 y/o would enjoy in my opinion because a lot of the jokes are references for older generations.
My suggestion would be PETER or THE ASSEMBLED PARTIES (which I have yet to see). I took some straight guy friends to SILENCE a few weeks ago and they all enjoyed it so maybe that's an option if he likes vulgarity.
I'm not sure any of the current plays would be of interest to a 21 year old unless he was a theatre afficianado. I've seen them all--except for The Big Knife--and Vanya was by far the best with The Nance a distant second.
VANYA AND SONIA AND MASHA AND SPIKE. No question. Go. The humor is spot on, and everyone can find something!
I'm not much older than 21 and though I'm obviously a theatre person, I went to see Vanya and Sonia and Masha and Spike with a group of friends who don't particularly like theatre.
Everyone loved it and many of my friends are planning a revisit.
It's incredibly funny and heartwarming and it is probably the best all-around cast show on Broadway at the moment.
I would definitely recommend VANYA, don't get me wrong. I'm just saying that your brother won't really be invested in Vanya's monologue as my friend wasn't and he's 23. And he might not also be amused by the whole Maggie Smith thing. I could be wrong but that's just my opinion on the situation.
BULL at 59E59 might be fun. If you want, you can stand right next to the boxing ring and watch the action from close up. Plus, it's only 55 minutes long. I enjoyed it.
Thanks all! I'm thinking we might shoot for Peter And The Starcatcher since I haven't seen it since it in since it opened on Broadway. Vanya et al is another possibility since I would like to see it now that it's on Broadway, although when I asked his interest in a farce he seemed less than thrilled.
I never in a million years expected my very bro ish brother to want to see a show, although I feel like he'll be better off not coming with my mother and I to see Kinky Boots...
I haven't seen BULL yet but I've heard positive things. Plus it's made more like an event being able to stand ringside. The tickets are fairly cheap in general too. I think ringside "seats" are only $30.
If you want to bore yourself and your brother.. go see Peter and the Starcatcher. I fell asleep and it is much ado about nothing. Go see Vanya. Your brother probably doesn't even know what a farce is if he doesn't like theatre.

F@CkING UP Everything. It is cute short and cheap!
Although I personally did not like it.. the show I'd recommend for non theatre lovers is Rock of Ages.
