The 1964 TONY AWARD for Best Actress in a Musical...who do you feel deserved it?
Carol Channning for HELLO, DOLLY
or
Barbra Streisand for FUNNY GIRL
(This isn't meant to start a feud. I was just curious as to people's opinions as each role is extremely taxing...although one has not been as easy to replace as the other.)
Streisand for talent & voice
&
Channing for personality

Streisand is a Jewish princess.
Inga Swenson--I saw all 4 nominees, ans she burned up the stage! And Bea Lillie was no slouch, either.

Ahem...... CHANNING all the way!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I have to say Channing. Streisand won the Oscar for her performance in the same role so just by that and the fact that Carol Channing is...well, Carol Channing, I'd have to give the edge to Channing.

Would I be a scrooge to ask if anyone who's weighed in actually saw the nominated performances?
Well, both performances have been frozen in time for over forty years...
For those Streisand fans among us .. I found this website that has this shirt that says W.W.B.D.?(What would Barbra do?) with her picture above it.
Not relevant, but the opportunity presented itself to bring it up.
::shrugs::
Streisand no question. Watching and listening to Channing is like hearing nails on a chalkboard.
Channing won it for a reason. A true Tony victory, and a most charming woman indeed.
STREISAND!!! Channing makes my throat hurts in sympathy when i hear her. It's awful as fingernails on a chalkboard. No, worse.
EDIT: I guess the chalkboard thing has already been said. Oh well.
And off topic I know, but who the **** cast Charles Nelson Reilly as Cornelius? I find the entire cast recording to be complete unlistenable.
He is so gay in the role! The only nominee to lose Tony!
I didn't see any of the performances, and though I've seen clips of Channing and think she has an unmatcheable presence.
However, my point is that when people complain about singing voices. The Tony is NOT for Best Singer or Best Vocalist, it is for Best ACTRESS. Many times a singer's style should be taken into account, like does it match the character, etc. But to complain about Channing's voice in a conversation about winning the Tony is ridiculous.
Carol Channing...no question. She is brilliant!
Side note: Has anyone heard her sing "Men" from the Lorelei cast recording? La Channing is incredible...wish I was alive to witness that performance.
Can't we have a tie?
