After taking ljay889's inspired Musical Poll, I couldn't help feeling I was voting for some musicals just because they weren't the worst, not necessarily because they were the "best".
So, for another take on the poll, I've created one that includes the Best Originals with the Best Revivals. So each year, out of 8 musicals (and sometimes, less), which one was the best?!
Sweeney and (both) Gypsys may finally have their revenge. Enjoy! :]
(Also, please comment after you've voted, to keep the thread alive.)
Poll: Best Musicals (Original or Revival)
Wow, throwing revivals and originals together really makes this hard! How can you choose between Avenue Q and Assassins?

Easily. Caroline or Change wins hands down.
Just choose Avenue Q and you'll be fine. :)
CAROLINE, OR CHANGE is the most exciting new musical in the last decade, but (for me) the Encores! production of FOLLIES is by far the best revival.

The ENCORES Follies was wonderful and so was Washingtons Mame with Christine Baranski ... why those two shows never came to Broadway is beyond me when Finians Rainbow and Ragtime can...

Easily - by choosing Wicked (please don't throw things)
I thought 2002 was hard, too...but Into the Woods is by far one of my favorites, so I had to choose it.

That WAS hard - especially 2002!
The Boy From Oz, it had Hugh Jackman for goodness sake! haha
Wicked, then Spring Awakening. Last Five Years one of my guilty pleasures....
Great poll. I was surprised at how many revivals made my list, especially in the second half of the decade. "Caroline, or Change" remains the premier musical of the decade, but I would agree that the Encores "Follies" was a phenomenal revival. Too bad that one never had a BW transfer.

2000: The Music Man
2001: The Producers
2002: Urinetown
2003: Man of La Mancha
2004: Assassins
2005: Monty Python's Spamalot
2006: The Drowsy Chaperone
2007: Spring Awakening
2008: Sunday in the Park With George
2009: Hair
I'm tempted to put Drowsy as the automatic winner, but I think Sunday is the clear winner.
YANK!
I'm really loving all the appreciation for Caroline, or Change.
2000: Kiss Me, Kate
2001: 42nd Street
2002: Urinetown
2003: Nine
2004: Caroline, or Change
2005: The Light in the Piazza
2006: Sweeney Todd
2007: Company
2008: Sunday in the Park with George (The hardest year, for me, to choose)
2009: Next to Normal
Overall winner: Caroline, or Change, with Company in a close 2nd and Sweeney Todd in 3rd.
Wow, that was one of the hardest things I've done in a while.
Urinetown, Wicked, Sweeney Todd, Gypsy, and Billy Elliot were the only ones I cared to vote for.
Wow, it's so great to hear everyone enjoying the poll (despite how challenging)! There have already been 109 responses. Here are the top-voted musicals of each year, so far:
2000: Kiss Me, Kate - 43
2001: The Producers - 47
2002: Urinetown - 49
2003: Hairspray - 57
2004: Caroline, or Change -35
2005: The Light in the Piazza - 45
2006: Sweeney Todd - 45
2007: Spring Awakening - 38
2008: Gypsy - 38
2009: Next to Normal - 48
Interesting, to say the least... 3 revivals, 7 originals. The closest year was 2004, with Avenue Q, 30 votes, only 6 behind Caroline. The biggest runaway is Hairspray. Four musicals got 0 votes: A Year with Frog and Toad, Big River, Pal Joey, and Guys and Dolls.
Oh fun, two from just this year!
I'm sure some people cheated.
I contemplated that, but it's not like they're rewriting Tony history. It's marginal.
I am the one, can we view the results without voting again?
Good idea, here's a link to the results page.
