Controversial musicals
Sondheim's "Sweeney Todd" and "Assassins" are two that come to mind regarding being controversial in subject matter. Though considered a classic now, I recall that when Todd opened in 1979 there was a fair amount of press decrying its subject matter as being inappropriate for a musical.
