The other day in my theatre class, someone mentioned an open-mic bar near the Theatre District where members of the public and occasionally actors that just finished a show can sing showtunes. I forgot what she said the name of this place was, so does anyone know of a place like that?
They were probably talking about Don't tell Mama's on 46th I think...personally, my idea of the 5th ring of hell, but to each his own...
I'm right there with ya, lildogs. I went to Don't Tell Mamas for the first time on my last trip...and it was my last too. From the flooded bathroom to the "entertainment" it was a couple of hours of my life that I will never get back. Luckily, I had seen [tos] before going, so the evening wasn't a complete wash!
What a shame we don't have 'Roses Turn' in the Village anymore! Not so forced and plastic as 'Mamas'.
The wonderful Terri White used to work at 'Roses', behind the bar and on the mic- I experienced some incredible nights there.

I remember that it wasn't Don't Tell Mama's. The program might have been called something like The Greenroom, but I can't recall.
I do remember this: my classmate said it was hosted by Hunter Bell and Susan Black well, so if anyone remembers something they hosted, then this was probably it.
Sounds like The After Party at the Laurie Beechman. Which:
- is only on Friday nights, not every night, and
- has different hosts/guests every week, though yes Bell and Blackwell did host it on 10/17

Definitely the After Party at the Laurie Beechman. I've been several times and personally don't enjoy it, but it can be amusing.
There's open mic night every Monday in the TIme Out Lounge at New World Stages. Starts around 9-9:30.

My thoughts are that with good DJ/host guidance, this could be a really fun evening!
We need more "just plain fun", healthy outlets (not sure about all that drinking...just the singing, here) out there to de-stress from our daily grinds.
