I know what I usually wear to a Broadway show is perfectly acceptable (nice jeans and polo). But recently i got tickets to the premier of Shrek (Nov 8,) and I'm wondering if that same dress code is acceptable for a premier, or does the dress code become more strict? Would I be safer with black pants and a button-down?

It is the first preview. You should be fine with your regular attire. Enjoy!

A first preview performance is NOT like nor similar to an 'Opening Night' performance. Regular theatre garb is expected -- I'm sure you'll even see a handful of flip-flops being worn, if weather permits it. Preview performances aren't even considered 'real' performances by many, so don't sweat it.
This would be appropriate garb for a first Broadway preview performance:
