I figure Lucas has got to be better than Walliams, and I survived No Man's Land just fine (the things I do for Goold...), so I don't really have any issues with this one. That said, despite the awesomeness of Chris New and the tales I've heard of the production values* this one's only on my "maybe" list. I've overindulged a little this year and am thinking about cutting back for winter. We'll see how *that* goes!
I wasn't totally enamoured of the piece. I think it might be more interesting to people with no prior knowledge of Orton and Halliwell and the outcome of their story. The performances are very good but nothing in the playing or direction helps you understand why Orton stayed with Halliwell who comes across as unattractive, pompous and overbearing from the get-go. And there's a lot of "rushing around" acting which looks very odd in a bedsit, and characters shouting witty epigrams without actually listening to each other so I found it all rather uninvolving.
I wouldn't let Matt Lucas put you off. Yes you can see some LB characters coming out through his acting but it is a brilliant piece.
Uni is GREATTT! Loving the London life, seen so many shows in the last couple of weeks (catwalk confidential, la cage, avenue q, pitmen painters, ****up your ears). Seeing 2 a week at least .
Will be back posting regularly when I get the net in my halls.
Well, for those of you who weren't too enamoured of seeing Lucas in it, he's now pulled out after his ex committed suicide this weekend and he understandably doesn't feel he can continue. Understudy Michael Chadwick will go on in his stead. Poor Matt...
He's only out 'until further notice' which his management are saying as 2 weeks. It must be an awful time for him and I'm sure everyones thoughts are with him.
I can't honestly tell if some posters on here are trying for levity but, if so, it isn't really working for me. :-/
I can't see there's any way that Matt Lucas will ever return to this production, I just hope he finds sufficient strength in the support and succour of his family / loved ones to make it through to the other side of what he's probably going through at the moment. Then, if/when he feels ready, he'll resume his career, but I doubt critical opinion will mean much to him. I hope he can find some joy and peace in the long run.
Sorry if I'm projecting a bit too much, just wouldn't wish this sort of situation on anyone...
Perfectly understandable if takes the decision to not return. It should be respected and he should take time to get over this dreadful personal tragedy that has become awfully public.
'Phantom, shame on you - do you really think people will buy tickets just because his ex committed suicide?'
As soon as Michael Jackson died, you could not get tickets for Thriller at TKT's, if he was alive I doubt Thriller will still be in London now.
'WOW. What an awful, callous thing to say. D:'
Yes it is a callous thing I said, I have no problem with Matt Lucas and would say he is a decent chap.
However I suggest Matt pricks up his ears, stick his chin out and get back in his play like yesterday. If Kevin Mcgee was so distraught at losing Matt, he would of hanged himself a long time a go, nearly three years ago when they split, but he took £1.8m of Matt's money, when he was the one sighted in the divorce for 'unreasonable behaviour' and what did he do with the money............stuck it up his nose, then the coward he is, performs the most selfish, dastardly and capricious acts and commits suicide, devastating his family and friends.
I would urge Matt to move forward with his life and his new partner and put this behind him ASAP.
Callous I maybe, but certainly not wearing rose tinted glasses for this coke-head sorry!!

I wasn't aware that it was struggling before. And either way, neither of these are "publicity stunts", however much the producers of the show might try and take advantage of them. (Though I see no indication that the producers of Matt's play are attempting to do that.)

Actually they only married in December 2006, and they divorced in October last year.

That's a rather simplistic way of looking at it.

That's the one sensible thing in your post. You should have just left it at that.

What are you actually saying? Why, according to you, did he commit suicide?
Latest news - I had tickets for tonight (Friday's) show but managed to persuade the staff at Ambassadors to swap them for November 20th. I figured, if Matt isn't back by then then he ain't going back.
So Con O'Neil is taking over from Matt Lucas. He was in the audience last Thursday night. I actually thought Micheal Chadwick did a fantastic job in the role, and at times I found it hard to even see Lucas in the role.
What does everyone think about Matt Lucas withdrawing completely from the role? Has he over-reacted? Is he wrong in blaming himself perhaps?
Contrast his action with Tony Roberts in the current Broadway production of The Royal Family who was hospitalised after suffering a seizure on stage during the Sunday matinee but was back in the role for the Thursday opening night. That's old school, the-show-must-go-on style.
Considering Lucas was nightly playing a murder-suicide story of a troubled gay relationship, I can see why he wouldn't want to go back. If he were doing The Music Man or something, I might roll my eyes and pfft and say they don't make 'em like they used to, but while people may disagree on the level of professionalism on display, you've got to admit it would probably be emotionally devastating to continue to play this particular role at this particular time.
I'd say the same about any actor who found themself in a situation similar to that of a play they were in-death of a partner/parent etc, most people get compassionate leave of a few days from work for things like that but when they go back they don't have to keep revisiting similar emotions day after day. I think it's understandable he wanted to leave.
Maybe I'm on nobody's side
