yeah, all my friends start turning 21 this winter, so next time I'm in Times Sq. and a creepy man comes up trying to sell IDs, maybe I'll buy one.
:)
"I read the thread title and thought that Idina was gettin some from Avenue Q..."
Ooo, then maybe Idina, Lucy, and Kate could have a cage brawl for him.
I say, "cage, mud, and wrestle!"
DING! DING!

Just back from the show...
I hate to say it, but my only problem was the show was the hoards of 14 year-old, playbill clutching, t-shirt wearing, "Wicked" fans. I don't think I need to go into further explaination.
The show itself was great. Ms. Menzel is a dynamic vocalist. She told a few touching stories, did a hilarious 80's wedding singer sequence and sang a few tunes that we here at BWW might know. She seemed very down to earth and didn't take herself too seriously. We had a great time. I was a bit upset because while the early show was full of teenagers, the late show seemed like it was going to be full of uber-hotties.
Oh well.
Eh, that's a shame that her audience always seems to be full of those noisy kids. They really ruin the atmosphere. Glad to hear you did enjoy Idina, though. :)
*bump*
Anyone going tonight?
I went to the 7:30 Show. It was great and she got a rave in the Boston Globe today. The thing I respect about Idina is that she doesn't just sing her own stuff. In fact probably on a third of the songs were hers or associated with her. Her encore was Like a prayer, which is kinda fun considering the buzz around Evita.
The main issue I had was the incredible amount of kids that were there. Seriously like 9 year old kids. And their parents had brought them from far away -- like Florida -- for this show. I am sure they wanted to go because she is "elphaba" but people, did you think? This is not a show for kids under 14. And kudos to Idina she does not pander to this audience.
I am going to the 7:30 show tonight. I really cant wait. I bought tickets early but because I would be taking the subway home I chose the early show. Few questions. what time did the 7:30 show end? Did she sign afterwards? Also about the bar I am guessing there will be kids at the 7:30 show will that mean the bar will not be open or will I be able to get a drink? last but not least can you take pictures while she is performing? Thanks
OMFG! The 730 show last night was sooo amazing!!! I could not belive how much energy and personality this women has. Even after seeing her in Wicked and listening to her all the time she passed my expections! Her belt is what impressed me the most, she is such a powerful singer. K, so we were in the hotel and were just walking around before the show whent to the third level and there she was!! I told her "break a leg" she looked in a rush so i just asked her if she was going to do autographs after the 730 she shook her head and said "if there is time in between shows" wich there wasnt. Anyway so the show started with Take me or leave me, it was really high energy! then she whent on to sing stuff from her albums and talked about how she WANTS TO HAVE A BABY and whatnot. pretty much it was the same as the others shows in p-town. except for the encore she sang my fav. maddona song "like a prayer" evita symbolism....hmmm. And no the show wasnt cut down at all judging to the proior post on p-town.
I was there at 9:30 last night and it was still full of kids. The girl in front of me couldn't have been more than 10. She was wearing a green skirt and a Wicked tee shirt. She sat on her mother's lap for the entire show, clapping her hands above her head completely blocking my view. Every time Idina would swear or do something dirty, the mother would cover the girl's eyes or ears. During the little question and answer segment, the mother screamed "Take one from the little one!" Idina ignored her. They were obnoxious. It wasn't REALLY bad until she started "Defying Gravity." Their entire table was so loud and what not. The overall crowd was a disappointment. There were a few moments in the show that could have been pretty sentimental, but were ruined by people who would scream and interrupt her. The battle of "I LOVE YOU IDINA!" "Well, I LOVE YOU MORE!!!" Seemed like it wouldn't end. Idina herself seemed pretty annoyed with the crowd. They were borderline rude. It really put a damper on the overall experience. I'm seriously wishing I had an ID to get into Martha's Vineyard, because I really think that's the only show that's not going to be rediculous.
The review:
CAMBRIDGE -- A few eyebrows were raised when Idina Menzel stepped onto the small Regattabar stage last night. In a pair of low-slung jeans, sporting a casual black T-shirt and ponytail, Menzel hardly looked like a typical jazz singer. That's because she's not a typical jazz singer. She's not a typical anything. For 90 minutes, Menzel demonstrated not just her vocal prowess, but also her storytelling skills, wit, and knack for musical improv. And none of it had anything to do with jazz.
Menzel is perhaps best known as the having earned a Tony last year for her portrayal of Elphaba -- that's the (green) Wicked Witch of the West to the uninitiated -- in the Broadway musical 'Wicked." She also originated the role of Maureen in 'Rent."
Menzel's performance started innocently enough with a funky rendition of 'Take Me or Leave Me" from 'Rent," but soon took a fearless and entirely more personal turn as Menzel folded in songs she had written, whether they be from her albums or tunes she and members of the band wrote just before the show. With each song, Menzel demonstrated her ability to deliver songs of varying styles and genres. She can belt and lilt with the best of them, mixing in a fair amount of colorful, even wicked, language as she goes.
In the song 'Penny," Menzel shows power, but with a touch of vulnerability. In an unnamed song written for her younger sister, Menzel honors her strayed-from Jewish faith with an urgency that churns as the song develops from a cappella prayer to a song with full accompaniment from the four-person band behind her.
A third of the performance was devoted to a madhouse medley of songs and stories depicting Menzel's turn as a wedding and bar mitzvah singer in the late '80s and early '90s. She manically flips back and forth from vocals to anecdotes in this high-energy section in which no overplayed wedding song is safe.
Menzel shares more than her voice in her concert; she shares parts of her own life. In an unguarded moment, Menzel offered that she is terrified to take her show to New York. It's true there is the occasional vocal or lyrical stumble in Menzel's performance right now, but there is nothing standing in the way of her continuing to succeed with this show.
I have a feeling she is just going to have to wait this out. A few more shows, a few more f-bombs, and parents might just realize this is not the place for their small children. Part of what makes her show so entertaining is her authenticity when she talks about her life, and that includes the swearing and off-color subjects. Soon enough the Elhpaba thing will die down . . . or we can at least hope. Until then, maybe she will only target venues that permit 18/21 or older. She has mentioned coming out to the west coast at some point, hopefully, by then, things will be a bit better.
I'm hoping that will be the case. It would be great if she did at least 1 show 18+ in NYC. But then again, I can picture some people over 18 who are just as crazy.
So am I going to be able to get a drink at this bar or will the close it down because of the kids?
You can get a drink.
They're really expensive.
$3.50 for a tiny glass of diet coke, the bar drinks were $7-10.
With that many kids at the Show, Idina will be the one needing the drink.
Meagan, what encore did she do? If it was like a prayer, how was it?
OMG LIKE A PRAYER!
...and she sang the sh*t out of that song.
I can't even put it into words, you need to see it yourself!!!
haha yeah last night she goes to her guitar player (I forget his name
) "I'm getting you sooo drunk tonight."
Rick. That sounds right.
Princeton~ I am going tonight at the 7:30 show! I am soooooo excited! I can hardly wait!
wicked obsessed I love you avitar. I actually know him personally. His cousin is my vocal coach he is the reason I scored tickets to Spelling bee. Ok that of off topic sorry I just thought I would share.
I really am getting excited. Only a few hours left.
I know him personally too! We had the same part in my local theater group. He played Friar Tuck in Robin Hood years ago, and I recently played it too! So he came to one of the performances and we did the song together backstage!
have fun tonight kiddos.
Report back on the 7:30, I'll do the same on the 9:30...on Monday, as I'm going to Spamalot and Dirty Rotten Scoundrels tomorrow!!!
:)
i saw the 930 on friday. it was just unbelievable. it was by far one of the most amazing things i've ever seen.
i, being 14, was certainly one of the youngest ones there. just so you all know i appreciate idina for everything she has done, not just wicked, and i didnt scream out I LOVE YOU IDINA or anything like that. and i didn't wear wicked attire. just so you know.
there were some annoying people including people yelling out I LOVE YOU IDINA! she seemed pretty annoyed... for good reason.
as people have said, this show definitely wouldn't be appropriate for anyone under 12 or so, and a mature 12 at that.
i actually got saw her leaving the hotel and managed to meet her and get her autograph! i really didn't want to bother her, but i asked very nicely, and she signed her cd i brought for me. she even asked for my name. i now understand why people say she's not very nice to her fans. she was very nice to me, but she was reserved. she was probably very tired so she didn't talk much, but she still took the time to sign for me. maybe this was because even though i am 14, i didn't start screaming IDINA I'M YOUR BIGGEST FAN or anything like that. i didn't act like a crazy, wicked obsessed fangirl. scary fangirls probably intimidate her. i mean, wouldn't you be scared if people you didn't know started running up you you saying OHEMMGGEEEE ITS (insert name here) I LOVE YOU I'M YOUR BIGGEST FAN!!!
i don't know. this is just my opinion, and i wanted to share my experience.
