D'oh! I knew 'farmer's boy' sounded wrong when I typed it but I had a mental block and no internet access to correct it when the penny dropped.

Anyway, HAPPY BIRTHDAY Hot John - enjoy your pre-show cocktails etc! I will look out for you in all your feathery finery at Priscilla this evening... (and James and his tall companion too). I will be wearing pink sequinned shoes in honour of the occasion. re: The Big Pink Bus Has Departed

Will be very odd seeing an understudy for Tony. Ive seen the show twice and twice the audience stood as he walked down the stairs.

Even on that evening when that lady from the audience collapsed on stage at the start of Act II, the second half of the show was quiet low and nobody stood at the end till Tony walked down. Hes a legend and also a gentleman.

An odd request... I don't suppose anybody can point me in the direction of a photo of Danielle Coombe as Shirley? I'd be most grateful and that.

The photo is by Matt Crockett - well worth taking a look at some of his other pictures. There's some brilliant ones of this year's Pride: http://www.flickr.com/photos/mattcrockett/

re: The Big Pink Bus Has Departed

Am going on Monday as a friend is moving away for a couple of years and wants to see it before she leaves, plus I want to see Oliver Thornton's understudy. Got £25 'restricted view' grand circle seats, which are pretty bargainous, you miss very little sight-lines wise, though the atmosphere is a lot more muted that high up.

What a drag...

Off for another dose of the clap(ping along) tonight at the Palace to kick off my birthday celebrations. I'm taking two forty-something 'West End virgins' to see their first-ever London show. Looking forward to seeing their reactions as well as whats on stage. Also seeing Hairspray this weekend, I expect emotions might be running quite high at the Shaftesbury tomorrow evening (on stage and at the stage door).

I'm ridiculously excited seeing as I've seen both these shows a few times previously. What a drag...

Mission accomplished!

Got what I wanted for my birthday: Mission accomplished!

Mission accomplished!

Not many of the buggers dropped within audience reach on Friday so I had to blag this one from the conductor.

Almost missed Tony Sheldon at the stage door too, but it was well worth the effort in the end (it was to me anyway, not sure my friends understood when I explained my mission before the show)! They absolutely loved it and one of them was particularly taken by the sight of Mr Thornton in a sparkly bikini. Mission accomplished!

Seating query

Has anyone ever sat in Row C of the Stalls ? Is it too close ?
#415

Seating query

Row C is absolutely fine - where in it are you sitting? I've been in Row B and it's fine. The only time you'll have an issue is with the giant shoe going overhead for a few moments, but apart from that you'll have an incredible view.
#416

Seating query

Its not the best you really should admit- I sat in D for opening night and it was too high and too close!
#417

Seating query

I think it all depends on what you enjoy personally, though, that close you're right up against the actors and that's thrilling in itself, and you don't really have to lean back much apart from the shoe moment - I really liked Row B when I sat there! But something like Row G is slightly less intense and a perfect view for everything, but I wouldn't not go for Row C, unless you're right at the edges, in which case you might have some restricted view?
#418

Seating query

Just to clarify I have already seen the show from the second row of the Dress Circle and fancied a Stalls view for my next visit.

Am being offered centre aisle seats.

I should also say I am talking about a Saturday night when the Premium seats kicks in for D-H 8-23

I'd say go for Row C James - depending on how tall you are the only thing you might miss is the 'roadkill' scene (and you obviously won't get the full spectacle of La Traviata). But you might get a ping-pong ball(!) and you'll certainly experience a great atmosphere on a Saturday night in the front stalls - I've seen quite a few interesting costumes in the first few rows when I've been sat there...

Seating query

Anyone else go tonight? Matt Cole was on for Oliver, Craig Ryder for Jason and a couple of swings on for Shirley and Jimmy. Was a really interesting experience seeing how differently they did things!

Seating query

I was there. In the "Les Girls" scene, poor Young Bernadette's cape got caught on the kitchen table and she ended up dragging it around the stage with her.

Seating query

Yes, I saw that, poor Steven Cleverley. Dealt with it well, though, Tony had to reach out and detach it! Thought both Craig and Matt had nice voices and my friend - who hadn't been before - really enjoyed it (I have been more than a few times and completely love the show, so bear with me while I ramble...).

Craig did better on getting the emotional side of his character for me than Matt. I loved his interaction with the kid playing Benji (thankfully, the only funny and in-tune one of the bunch!) and the little moments he brought to the Tick/Adam relationship. Matt's post-Hot Stuff was very good but otherwise I didn't really feel the character progression Oliver Thornton brings to it.

However, considering they've not had months to hone their portrayals you can't really be too harsh on them. Nice audience, but I think the inexperience of the understudies meant some of the comedic possibilities were passed over, though they were definitely getting the emotional stuff, which I always prefer to see appreciated! Would be interested to see Oliver Thornton/Craig Ryder/Tony Sheldon combo when Jason takes his holiday.

Understudies

I saw Craig Ryder on as Tick with Tony Sheldon and Oliver Thornton a good few weeks ago when Jason Donovan filmed the Jonathon Ross show - I thought he did a great job. He definitely got the emotions right and I thought he connected really well with his co-stars (who had to help him cope with a number of wardrobe malfunctions). I'm seeing him again as Tick in a couple of weeks when presumably he'll have had the luxury of more rehearsal time.

I also saw Matthew Cole on as Adam recently but wasn't quite so impressed - it seemed more like an impersonation of OT's performance than a different take on the character. But I think that was just a one-off too, so hopefully a week's run will see him grow into it more now the 'first-night nerves' have been dealt with.

Edited to add that I also saw Jeremy Secombe go on as Bob last week and he did a bonza job. I was worried he might look too young next to Bernadette (no offence to TS!), but they 'greyed' him up quite successfullly. Though I did notice they seemed to omit the line "He's not my type of course, he's far too old."

Good luck to Mark Inscoe for his upcoming stint as Bernadette. Don't think I'll be able to make the trek to London that week, so will be interested in hearing others' opinions.

Ross Coleman

Very sad to read today that PRISCILLA's Australian choreographer Ross Coleman died in his sleep aged 60. He was the very top of his field and will be greatly missed.
