Terrible news has reached my ears - the Toronto production of Priscilla, although having already been cast, has been pulled. Legally Blonde is taking its spot in the Mirvish season.
Plans have now changed to open the show in the US in late 2010, but whether it will be on tour or straight into New York is still unknown.
That's VERY disappointing if true BoyfromOz - I always reckoned Priscilla would be a much harder sell in North America than it has been in the UK, but I still thought Toronto was a great place for a tryout in order to tweak the show for a (potentially) very different audience in NYC. I don't really see it as a touring show in the US, but I hope it has enough mileage to make it malleable for Broadway.
It is true, TIGGOSAURUS. It's being reported that Toronto's Royal Alexandra Theatre, the theatre that Priscilla was to move into, is too small to fit Priscilla's large sets. Others are speculating that the show is just too expensive for the Mirvishes in the current economy.
This news annoys me because I was just in London and opted not to see Priscilla because the cancellation had not been announced yet. If I had known, I would have seen Priscilla in the West End. I can only hope that Jason Donovan is still in the cast when I visit London again next year.
Toronto has a long history of pulling or moving shows at its subscription theatres. The Prince Of Wales Theatre could almost be custom built for 'Priscilla' (I saw 'LOTR' there.) The Royal Alex Theatre is smaller than most theatres in London and would most certainly have problems with the big pink bus!
Also remember that the smash hit that is 'Hairspray' flopped hugely in Toronto just a few years ago. Not everything works there. The Canadian production of 'The Producers' died a death in Toronto's cannon Theatre.
Shocked Priscilla has been pulled in Toronto, thought it would be the perfect place to launch in North America, I could see this show doing really well in San Fransisco because of the strong 'pink dollar' there, however I could not see Priscilla setting its destination blind for New York now.
Shirley Bassey saw the show last week and loved it as did Cilla Black and Biggins. Dame Shirley had a dinner table booked and had to run so couldn't do the traditional cast photo after the show. She promised to return in a few months time. I'm guessing she just wanted to see Tony Sheldon in the part of Bernadette, not the understudy!
I'm from Toronto (pissed that this show got pulled). Anyway, I'm planning to go to London in the 2nd week of Oct. and I'm sooooo going to see this show, I hope the original cast will be performing.
Beside this show, I want to see Le Cage, and Dorian Gray. The problem is that there's NO SHOW on Sunday.
Any news if this show or Le Cage will be showing on Sunday??
By the way, how soon should I buy the tickets, on line right now or wait til I get to London?
