Isn't the story a little dated?

"Impossible is just a big word thrown around by small men who find it easier to live in the world they've been given than to explore the power they have to change it. Impossible is not a fact. It's an opinion. Impossible is not a declaration. It's a dare. Impossible is potential. Impossible is temporary. Impossible is nothing.” ~ Muhammad Ali

What's dated about it?

I just think if a gay musical is going to hit Broadway it should push the envelope more, that's all.

Really Useful is co-producing the production on the West End. They do not have anything confirmed about it yet, the last time I asked. I doubt they would co-produce the show in New York.

A potential Broadway musical about drag queens and a tranny isn't pushing the envelope?

The story is far from dated....

Gay man w/ child.
Slutty Gay man w/ poo of ABBA around neck.
Tranny who finds true love.

These are the things of today for the gay community. (okay maybe not the poo-- but still)

It may be a 'modern' story but it is full of classic story telling.

Love, Friendship, Finding ones voice and being you are.

"Whenever I get gloomy with the state of the world, I think about the arrivals gate at Heathrow Airport. General opinion's starting to make out that we live in a world of hatred and greed, but I don't see that. It seems to me that love is everywhere. Often it's not particularly dignified or newsworthy, but it's always there - fathers and sons, mothers and daughters, husbands and wives, boyfriends, girlfriends, old friends. When the planes hit the Twin Towers, as far as I know none of the phone calls from the people on board were messages of hate or revenge - they were all messages of love. If you look for it, I've got a sneaky feeling you'll find that love actually is all around."

Twenty-four years after LA CAGE and 35 years after ROCKY HORROR, no its not terribly envelope-pushing, I'd say.

and you think that the crap, I mean crop of musicals that are out there now are pushing the envelope?

Perhaps In the Heights but what else out there right now? Even Avenue Q is a little dated.

Whatever. If its fun, its fun. I was kind of hoping the jukebox musical was over, tho.

This is one of the few movie to musicals that I'm really looking forward too. I just hope that they don't just try to recreate the movie and have some sort of point for putting it on the stage.

Ok, having worked the show and seen Priscilla over 100 times (but I am not in anyway associated with the production) I can say that Priscilla is more than a show about drag queens, or a juke box musical. Yes it has spectacular costumes, and fabulous disco hits. But under the outer layer of camp lies a heart as wide as the Simpson Desert.
The three main characters portrayed in this show are unlike any other seen on a musical stage before. The journey I find most touching is that of Tick, who is going to meet his son for the first time. Watching his fear of rejection build throughout the show, watching his tension grow and then drop away with one single act of affection from his accepting, innocent son is just one of the most touching things I have ever seen on a stage. It never failed to bring a tear to my eye.
Add to this the flawless performance of Tony Sheldon as the beautiful Bernadette, the "mother hen" if you will.
All of this, plus Tim and Lizzie's incredible costumes, and you have a truly spectacular piece of theatre that never loses its heart for an instant. Its truly Australian and truly wonderful.

"I will join this conversation on the proviso that we stop bitching about people. Wigs, dresses, bust sizes, penises, nightclubs and bloody Kylie!" - Bernadette, Priscilla Queen of the Desert the Musical

Is the cast recording on Itunes? Or should I just order from Amazon (or Footlight)?

Tony Sheldon was definately fantastic.

Nick Hardcastle (Felicia u/s) was as well. Granted half the audience was willing to go gay for him after the show but that is another story. re: Priscilla-Queen of the Desert- Is it coming to the U.S.?

And not all shows have to be about pushing the envelope. Some are just good old fashion fun and entertaining evenings out with a few catchy tunes and plenty of eye-candy.

Why do shows with gay themes have to push the envelope? Many Broadway musicals are just pure entertainment -- should gay themed musicals be specifically exempt from that possibility? Saying gay themed musicals can't be like regular musicals seems to be so -- well, limiting and prejudiced.

The only thing I would worry about Priscilla is translating it to an American audience. The UK isn't as bad, because the UK has been fed a staple diet of Aussie Soap Operas & second rate singers for the last 30 odd years, thus alot of those smaller Ockerism type jokes and incidental situations throughout the show (and there is certainly a heck of alot of them) wouldn't neccessarily go over the average West Enders head.

But on the other hand I highly doubt the Americans would get a good quarter of the jokes in the show (alot visual, alot verbal) because they are extremely Australiana BUT actually make the show the gem that it is.

Just make sure you ordered the actual cast recording and not the 'music that inspired the show' CD!!

Urban, I wouldn't be concerned with Americans not getting some of the jokes. After all they obviously got the references in the film. I can really only think of a couple of instances that may have to be altered (the roadkill that revolves around the bus while travelling).

The roadkill segment was actually the one I was thinking off (which is sad since it it one of the funniest bits of the show).

Of course all the Kylie references might be an issue since Kylie has only ever had like two hits in America.

Mention of Kylie suddenly makes me wonder why they didn't use any of her songs?

America,

Get on the bus whatever way you can!

Priscilla is worth it! I'd never seen the movie (*prepares for people to pounce- hey I'm a bit younger ok!)

But even though I hadn't the show was FANTASTIC!

The colour and the songs and the characters are just larger than life and fantastic.

Admittedly I was worried after the first number- I felt it was a little lack lustre, so I thought I was going to dread the rest of the show, but it just improved greatly from there!

'What's Love Got To Do With it' is HILARIOUS and 'Colour My World' is one of my favourite numbers.

The show made improvements between the Sydney and Melbourne seasons, it will make improvements in New Zealand, it will make improvements in Sydney (there's talk of a return) it will make improvements again in London, it would be slick and very polished by the time it arrives on Broadway.

For the overseas people- realise that the successful Australian Musical doesn't pop up very often. For Priscilla to do this well is REALLY good.

My Question is Boy From Oz and Priscilla- from a country that can be quite Homophobic (and Priscilla shows this during the number Hot Stuff) don't you think it's interesting that these successful musicals are both 'gay' musicals?

Sean

Its not looking to 'push envelopes' for gods sake. Its just up there to provide spectacular entertainment. Nothing more! Thats what its been doing in Sydney, Melborne and now New Zealand for the last 2 years. It opens in London in May/ June 2009. It never set out to make any statements!

A young actress with Noel coward after a dreadful opening night performance said to him 'Well, i knew my lines backwards this morning!'' Noels fast reply was ''Yes dear, and thats exactly how you said them tonight'!'
