Posted: 9/4/05 at 7:11pmjudging from the trailor and the pushed back release date in September, I have a feeling the Proof film could turn out to be quite a mess. The play is itself such a perfect complete entity, with only a need for one set location and four characters intertwined in each others lives. With a film adaptation, multiple locations are needed, characters are added, and basic "movie" plotlines (ie romance, the underdog story, good vs bad) are frequently implemented to better sell the film to a mass audience. It looks to me as if this film concentrates more on the jake g/gweneth romance than anything else. I think i recall an image of him chasing a car as she drove away. that's not what this play was about. but i cant say until ive seen it. all i will say is that the play was wonderful as is. I just hope the film interp doesn't overshadow the original work and force theatre companies to shy away from producing for fear of living up to the more widely known gwenneth paltrow movie version.

I saw PROOF onstage at the Donmar Warehouse, with Gwyneth. Given the intimate setting of this 250-seater theatre, it almost seemed like the audience was eavesdropping on a family squabble in the middle of a sunken living room.
I hope the movie interpretation adds a new dimension to the story that was already perfect onstage.

Posted: 9/4/05 at 9:43pmJust saw the trailer during the US Open on USA. I have also seen Proof onstage and I can remember throwing my hand up to my gaped open mouth at the end of Act 1. I have never seen an audience rush back to their seats for the second act like I did that evening. I wonder how that scene will play out on film and if it will, for those who have not seen the stage show, be the "secret" or "surprise".

Proof is my personal favorite play. Ever. I'm not saying that it's the best play that's ever been written (it's not; far from it), but it spoke to me in a way that almost no other play has.
I have such high hopes for this movie. I saw the trailer today and got so excited. It looks GREAT!

Posted: 9/6/05 at 5:32pmI have to admit that I've had my doubts about the film version of this great play, though the trailer does make the project look promising. Not only have I seen an excellent regional theatre production of this show, I also had the chance to direct it at a community theatre. I hope the promise of the trailer carries over to the entire film.
