Public Domain Day 2021: "Gatsby" goes free-use

Looks like this year, the major historic items entering the public domain are "The Great Gatsby" and the songs "Always" by Irving Berlin and "Sweet Georgia Brown."

Who will be the first to premiere a major A-list adaptation of Gatsby now? And are there any theatre or musical items that didn't make the big obvious list that are now free use?

I'v heard that Julia Houston and Tom Levitt are working on a musical adaptation of Gatsby

In my imagination: Adam Guettel vs. Lin-Manuel Miranda and Tom Kitt with the artsy versus the hip Gatsby.

If you want to get technical about it, it's not copyright infringement to have written a Gatsby musical adaptation prior to it entering the public domain (I'm no lawyer, but it should be protected under the 1st Amendment). It becomes a legal matter when you try to perform it. For all we know, Adam, Lin, Tom, and a bunch of other writers might have Gatsby musicals already written, waiting to drop when 2021 rolled around.
