Got to see this tonight via the standby line. For anyone planning to get tickets that way, I'd be sure to get there early. I arrived around 4:30 and was maybe 15th in line, and by the time a ticket was in my hand at 7:45, the line behind me was verrrrry long.
The wait was worth it, however, as this was sensational all-around. Twelfth Night is one of my favorite Shakespeare plays, and it's pared down well while still retaining all of the humor and romance. A big part of this comes from Shaina Taub's songs. Some, like Malvolio's number or a song called "You're the Worst" for the clowns, are quite fun, and there are a number of ballads that are heartbreakingly beautiful. In particular, there's a gorgeous song to take the place of Viola's ring speech. The cast- professionals and amateurs alike- couldn't be bettered. Nikki M. James and Andrew Kober were the standouts as Viola and Malvolio, and Jacob Ming-Trent continues to be an invaluable presence as Sir Toby- it's always so nice to see him on stage. The cameo groups are also all great- the Japanese drumming group is especially jaw-dropping.
Public Works is one of my favorite events of the year. Like The Odyssey last year, the whole show is infused with joy from every participant, and it's so fulfilling just to be in the audience and take it all in. Run to see this if you can- even if you have to wait a while for tickets, it will be well worth it.
I am a firm believer in serendipity- all the random pieces coming together in one wonderful moment, when suddenly you see what their purpose was all along.
