Being the big Renthead that I am. I was woundering if anyone knew if they were going to release the 10th year benifit on DVD anytime soon? I know they plan to do that with Chicago. I would of have done anything to be their. I NEED TO SEE IT WITH THE OBC. If not does anyone know when they will be performing all togeather again in NYC.
Thanks for your help

Umm no there not doing it with REnt and there not even doing doing it with Chiago. They're re-releasing the CD with a DVD with interviews. And other artists who have been in the show that they have recorded singing some of the popular songs from the show.

Posted: 8/31/06 at 3:22pmYou will NEVER see a show released on DVD while it is still playing. If they did everyone would buy the $20 DVD and not the $111 tickets and the show would close.

Posted: 8/31/06 at 3:32pmEvery show gets recorded, and most special events of this sort also are recorded. Rarely are any of them ever released. Especially now that the film exists, the odds of this happening are almost nil.

Posted: 8/31/06 at 4:37pmIf none of them are released, what is the point of recording shows? Or is there a special place that you can view them. Just curious.

First of all, not every show gets recorded. Second, the ones that do are generally recorded for storage at the Lincoln Center branch of the NYPL. They are archived there for research purposes, though most anyone with an Access Card can view any of the tapes (unless there is a special restriction). However, those recordings are the expense of the library, not the show, so it is entirely possible that the show can release any subsequent recording of the show. Though RENT's 10th anniversary was filmed, it remains to be seen if it will ever be released. Even if that recording was archived at the library, it doesn't mean it was filmed under the library's archive's supervision...it just means they are authorized to have a copy.
However, keep in mind that the tapes in the archives are NOT commercial quality. Those recordings are not allowed to be mass-produced at all, so NONE of them will ever be pubically available (well, in our lifetime, at some point the copyright on all these works will expire and they will enter the public domain).

Oh man, Renthead#1 . . . not only did you say the bad word (how long till this thread gets deleted?), but now that song is going to be stuck in my head all night!
To riding your bike midday past the three piece suits, To fruits, to no absolutes. To absolut, to choice, to the village voice. To any passing fad. To being an us, for once. Instead of a them

Posted: 8/31/06 at 9:12pmI think it was discussed right after the RENT 10 show that it was filmed for archive/press purposes and wasn't going to be released. I also remember someone posting that Anthony Rapp mentioned at a book signing that it would never be released because of issues with rights, etc...
#11re: RENT 10
Posted: 8/31/06 at 9:15pmI remember that, too; something about that Sony owns the rights to Rent as an on-screen entity, so any other film version of it (including the benefit filmed on stage) cannot be released. It was a sacrfice they made, I guess.

Posted: 8/31/06 at 10:18pmI believe Miss Saigon's closing performance was also recorded (multi-camera?), but we'll never see it unless someone decides to ransack Mackintosh's house(s).

NJRae> Saying Youtube isnt against BWW policy. Posting links to it are. Youtube is a refrence to a website everone knows exists. There is noting wrong with saying it. BWW Policy is:
"Please be advised that the posting of links to material located on such servers as YouTube is not permitted. YouTube is not copyright holders to commercial material nor (most likely) are the individuals posting videos to material to which they did not create themselves. "
It says nothing about mentioning the term youtube. If someone were to go there on thier own and search for a video there is nothing wrong with that.

myManCape: I was just kidding, lol. Although I do think I recall a thread or two being deleted b/c of too many youtube mentions, I was really just playing. Like "oooh, you said a bad word!"

Posted: 8/31/06 at 11:34pmThe mod deleted a thread because someone said "poop" for goodness sake. A mention of "forbidden website" is definitely risky. The mods don't really need any grounds to delete a thread, they can basically delete at whim.

"RENT 10 show that it was filmed for archive/press purposes and wasn't going to be released."
Point of fact...that doesn't mean the library is the one that filmed it. I just want to make that clear. It can possibly be archived at the library, but that doesn't mean they were involved in its production. So the potential for its release isn't tied with the library's usual restrictions. I doubt it will ever be commercially released, but the library won't be the reason why.

What? When is this going to happen?
