RENT SCREENPLAY

re: RENT SCREENPLAY#100

ok, it didnt when i posted lol.

for a song to be considered in that category, it has to be written specifically for the film. So, that means Larson won't be winning that Oscar. re: RENT SCREENPLAY

"Hey, Beka, did you see my question for you up there on this page? lol."

magic, i missed it before, but then i saw that NTG answered it. are you still confused? i can still clarify if you want...

"it has to be written specifically for the film."

yeah, on some thread ppl were saying that a song should be written for the movie so that it would be considered, which i am STRONGLY against...

Okay, I apologize.. apparently I'm blind!

Okay, I tend to refer to the 2000 screenplay as the Chbosky screenplay, and the later one as the Columbus screenplay. Makes sense now!

Ok, I just finished reading the script.

I was definitely skeptical going into it but I like it. I haven't read the original Chbosky screenplay (although I'd be interested if anyone knows where to find it) but I really enjoyed this one. My only concern is when Columbus takes sung dialogue from the show and directly translates it to spoken word. It just doesn't always flow well. I guess we'll see...

the 'RENT SCREENPLAY' thread is now open for business again! so feel free to leave any ideas you have, and we'll bounce ideas back at you... so i'll start...

how does everyone feel about the beginning of the columbus screenplay, with the close-up of angel, then the piano chords of seasons of love and a montage of NYC, beginning with the wealtiest areas of the city and moving towards the alphabet city areas that we know and love. any thoughts?

~ rebecca

p.s. - if you're looking for a copy of the screenplay, there's a link for both the chbosky and columbus versions in the dead center of page 3...

so talk to you guys soon!

I should probably hold my tongue until I'm as familiar with the CC version as I am with the Chbosky version so I don't get confused, but I like the montage of NYC scenes; gives you a good sense of the vast rifts that separate parts of NYC, which is pretty important to the overall idea of Rent, I think.

PLEASE NOTE:

those of you who are reading the scripts via the links on page three... Screenplay "#1" is NOT the Chbosky script, it is a fan one (or someone not associated with the production.) #2 is the Columbus script based on a version by Chbosky. Having read the 2000 script by Chbosky, I thought I should point this out. If you know this though - well, sorry!

The Chbosky one used to be online, but it's not anymore. I had someone send it to me.

PM me with your email if you want the Chbosky version.

I'm only checking in for the next couple hour cuz I have tests to study for, but I'll leave my two cents for now anyway.

First of all, I love the opening. I think it sets the mood really well, and I just love the whole feel of the city.

Another topic for discussion, if you guys don't mind.

In both the Chbosky and Columbus versions, the screenplay features an antique watch which Roger gives Mimi as a gift. It's better explained in the Chbosky version, but I still really like it staying in because I think it symbolizes 1) Roger's love for Mimi in that he would go to the trouble to give her something like that and 2) the fact that neither one of them has much time left. It kind of ties in with the whole seasons of love theme. Thoughts?

I still vehemently say that they should be using the Chbosky script (with a a few edits) for the shoot. *shrugs* oh well.

re: RENT SCREENPLAY#116

the symbolism about the watch -- the idea that mimi and roger don't have a lot of "time" left popped into my head instantly upon reading it, and i thought it was the perfect idea, even though it wasn't in larson's original rent.

re: RENT SCREENPLAY#117

Posted: 11/22/04 at 4:51pm

That really never occured to me, but now that you mention it, its a great symbolic reference.

One scene that I didn't particularly care for was Santa Fe. When I initially read it, I thought it was really corny that the train emerges from the tunnel in Santa Fe. Although, now that I think about it, it makes sense, I guess I was just getting visions of Polar Express lol

Also, so we don't bog down poor NTG, I have the Chbosky screenplay (as well as the other two, for that matter) saved on my computer, so if anyone wants any of them, I'll gladly send it to you.

Okay so now you guys have got three of us to choose from re: RENT SCREENPLAY

I've never really liked Santa Fe as a song in general. It's the one song in Rent I don't care for. It's always seemed kinda pointless...I dunno.

"I've never really liked Santa Fe as a song in general. It's the one song in Rent I don't care for. It's always seemed kinda pointless...I dunno."

i swear, we have the SAME brain. Santa Fe has never done anything for me as a song, and in the screenplay it's even worse. they should cut this out and put christmas bells or halloween back in!

...even though SF is important for the storyline, but we can deal with a long-ish movie if they put in our favorite songs (they were in the chbosky version, which is one of the many reasons why i like it better)... who's up for a 3.5 hour LOTR-ish rent movie? (even thought the show is 2.5 hours long, but a lot of the songs that were cut during the workshop could be added! that'd be awesome!) ok, i'm ranting, i tend to do that sometimes, i've held back until now... bye for now guys... i have 2 tests tomorrow to study for...

That'd be nice if it was though...but I refuse to turn this into a purely ranting thread. The Columbus version is by no means bad, and I'd be absolutely in love if I hadn't read the rough draft. Besides, Anthony told us they've already added more stuff back in since the draft we have...so who knows.

re: RENT SCREENPLAY#123

It's not that bad; in fact, I find it more similar to the Chbosky one than a lot of people seem to be finding it. And yes, the one we see is only a first draft, and the first time CC has touched it.

Random thought - Another Day just came on my iTunes shuffle. I haven't heard it in a while... and I just had this revelation of how amazing it's going to be to see Adam's Roger of perfection doing this. With the anger and pain he gave it and the flashbacks (they are in AD, right? If not, I'll feel really dumb) it has the potential be extremely powerful.
