SWEET MOTHER OF GOD!
I just read the screenplay...it is GREAT!
Glory-love the flashback idea, it gives the non-rent fans a clue on what is going on.
I was starting to tear up when I'll cover you (reprise) came up.
It was just GREAT!
Perfect way to make this show into a real movie.

Posted: 11/21/04 at 7:33pmI'm sorry if this has already been talked about, but where can i read the rent screenplay?
re: RENT SCREENPLAY#58
Posted: 11/21/04 at 7:35pmI believe the link is on the page right before this one.
re: RENT SCREENPLAY#59
Posted: 11/21/04 at 7:38pmThe screenplay is perfect. It keeps Larson's idea COMPLETELY, but makes it in a movie form.

i'll be back @ 8... i PROMISE! this is the only thing that's kept me sane, the only thing other than work i've done all weekend (i'm sure NTG is the only one who knows what i'm taking about.) ok, so 8. meanwhile, be thinking of topics! i expect some good ones!

i've gotten too many PMs about this... if you're looking for the screenplay, there's a link to the 2nd one on the bottom of the first page of this thread. here they are one more time:
first: http://www.kissmen.com/rentscripts/1.pdf
second: http://www.kissmen.com/rentscripts/2.pdf
so there they are, so PLEASE don't ask again!
and please don't join the convo until you're semi-well-versed it them, cause me and NTG don't wanna be explaining the whole thing. so there are the "rules" for this thread... now let's enjoy ourselves!
brb in 10 minutes... almost done with chemistry crap

Chemistry sucks...
Since no one answered me on the other thread, let's talk about how they changed the timeline in the screenplay.

sry im late... battle with my little sister, she thought i stole her halloween candy... *but i don't even LIKE almond joys!*
what other thread?
yes, the timeline. i don't think it was butchered too badly. some of the songs are in different scenes, but other than that, what differences in the timeline are you upset about?
re: RENT SCREENPLAY#64
Posted: 11/21/04 at 8:09pmThe fact that a lot of the action was taken from Christmas Eve and put on Christmas day. Also, as I said on the Anthony Rapp thread (wow that sounds weird), a lot of the things that add up to all the relationships seem to happen less by accident and more by people actually setting it up. It kind of takes out the whole concept of "one magic night" and everything happening by chance. Although I'm torn about that because I really like some of the devices used in setting people up. Also, I'm kind of sad that Halloween got lost...

When I saw Rent for the first time, I did find it a bit hard to believe all of Act I's activities took place in one night. So, to make the story somewhat more credible for the general public, I like the idea of extending the timeline a bit.
jacob, I wouldnt say the screenplay was perfect, but its definately a step in that direction. Some of the dialogue still needs a little working on, but other than that, I like the screenplay too. I teared during the hospital scene as well

Halloween is one of my favorite Rent songs, but the script works without it.
The timeline didn't get butchered too badly...and it saves all the expense needed for multiple nights to shoot.
I think the magic is still there, it just is more of a feeling inside the viewer than something that is just being shown.
re: RENT SCREENPLAY#68
Posted: 11/21/04 at 8:16pmTrue. Like I said, I'm torn about that. I kind of liked getting to see Aoril's suicide in the Chbosky version though.

"a lot of the things that add up to all the relationships seem to happen less by accident and more by people actually setting it up. It kind of takes out the whole concept of "one magic night" and everything happening by chance."
i see what you mean there. you're right.
"When I saw Rent for the first time, I did find it a bit hard to believe all of Act I's activities took place in one night. So, to make the story somewhat more credible for the general public, I like the idea of extending the timeline a bit."
that is true as well. i had a hard time believing everything happened that one night, especially when act II scans between months (and the different holidays) almost every scene. act I moves SO much slower than act II.
i so agree with halloween being gone! when i originally read the song list that anthony gave us, the one song i was upset about losing was halloween. everyone was upset about christmas bells, but i say forget about christmas bells, give me halloween!
re: RENT SCREENPLAY#70
Posted: 11/21/04 at 8:17pmThe Chbosky screenplay had me all teary-eyed by the opening credits lol. That opening scene was powerful.
re: RENT SCREENPLAY#71
Posted: 11/21/04 at 8:18pmI'm assuming Aoril is April (unless there was a different character) and I think as long as the shot shows her wrists the audience will get what happened.

"getting to see A(p)oril's suicide"
well we do kind of get to see the after-effects of it in one song glory...
"The Chbosky screenplay had me all teary-eyed by the opening credits"
yes, me 2! all us rentheads think alike...

I think the Chbosky screenplay was a lot more artistic and powerful for those who are already fans of the show, but I can see why this version will work better both logistically and for the general public.
There's this little part of me that would kind of like to see an adaptation of the Chbosky version done on stage...I know it would probably never happen and a lot would have to be changed, but it's an idea that just won't leave me alone.

"as long as the shot shows her wrists the audience will get what happened"
yeah, i got confused when the "slitting her wrists in the bathroom" line was cut out of tune up, but it came in later.
i don't really like that all the tune ups were butchered so much, i played the originals at the same time i was reading it, and many lines are different, besides them not being to music.
