RENT's songs wouldn't qualify, since they weren't written for the film, but for the theatre. You would need an all-new song (like an Angel/Joanne duet or something :P) to qualify.
For example: "Come What May" from Moulin Rouge could qualify. Nothing else from the musical could.
Better example: "You Must Love Me" from EVITA.

This is kind of just general Rent discussion, but since we're taking about it...
I remember reading in the Rent book that Larson said he wanted to change one sentence the day before he died, but it never happened. Thoughts on this?
Also, any thoughts on why some of Mark's narrations/plot details as to what happens to Mimi toward the end that were in NYTW got cut? It makes so much more sense the old way...

Anybody here?
Ok, well that will be our next topic of discussion when we do start again...unless someone has something better.
354 days til the movie if it stays on track.

Hehehe stalker! And now I know where you live! ::cackles::
Yeah, let's kill it for tonight...You need to show those teachers who's boss! And I'm gonna get kicked off by parental controls in 15 minutes anyway.
But I want my topics discussed, so...first thing after school tomorrow?
I won't be home until around 8, so feel free to start without me.

Ok, now that I have finished reading both scripts...
While I like the Columbus script, the Chbosky script is just brilliant. Almost flawless. Columbus has some "good screenwriting" but you can tell right from the introductory paragraph and the director's notes that Chbosky really GETS Rent. His script is raw and edgy and exactly how Rent should be. My only complaint would be the "movie within a movie" thing. It's been done and it just doesn't work here...at least not for me. Other than that, I think it's fantastic. Turning Contact into a rave is a great idea. And while I do like Mark singing La Vie Boheme, it can work with Maureen to.
Now here's the thing. Please don't flame me but if they were to go with this script, they'd have to get Roger. I think that Adam is great but you need a master actor to meet all of the acting challenges that Chbosky's version of Roger has. He also has very little screen acting experience. I also think that Maggie Benjamin should play Maureen. I personally think that she's the best Maureen and she'd have more appeal to the general public.

well you come forom an interesting point of view, however I think its a good idea to keep the original cast in, but thats probably cuz Ive never seen the original cast perform Rent, actually Ive never seen RENT, but still Id rather have Adam and Idina in it.
As long as Anthony's in it however Im happy
but again, I like them keeping the original cast

Posted: 11/23/04 at 2:54pmI thought the exact same thing, Mattio. We all know I am a staunch supporter of Mr. Pascal, but some of the stuff in that screenplay is incredibly intense, and I honestly (I said this when I first read it) don't know that I could see him believably displaying a lot of those things. And you're right about the film acting side of it; he has very little experience acting for a camera, and when he tries, that shows. His acting has improved, but they would need more than a "decent" actor with a killer set of pipes for a lot of those things; i.e. the rehab/withdrawl scenes, some of the flashbacks during Without You. There's a lot there that was never present for the original Roger... stuff that I liked, but stuff that doesn't really seem "Adam." Columbus is probably really going to have to push him for this. But... who knows? He's been known to surprise before...

ABOUT THE NEW SUBJECT-The stage script is just that-for the stage. You need something to resonate on film.
ABOUT ADAM- He is Adam...he will pull it off...or he'll just let us all down and have us hugging our sporks to get it over with

Don't get me wrong, Adam is a talented actor... I'm just not sure he's got THOSE kind of acting chops. We shall see.... I have faith.
ROTFLMAO, Jacob.

Emcee-I was glad you saw it first.
P.S. Glad to see Adam back as your avatar, though I do still miss AIDA. I sometimes just lie awake thinking to myself "WHY GOD? WHY DID AIDA HAVE TO CLOSE?"

haha, insomniak convinced me it was time to bring back a happy avatar; my signature is still quite mindful, though. *cries*
Besides, today is exactly one year from the time I first saw Adam as Emcee. It's fitting!

I do wish I could have seen him as Emcee. My friend did and she said he was GREAT (but than again she's into guys and..well...nothing against Adam but I'm not. Though I will say he is a handsome man).
But I did get to see him twice as Radames(once OBC and once FBC) and now I will get to see him as Roger :)
Sorry for the threadjack...moving on.

Posted: 11/23/04 at 5:14pmWhen I went to see Cabaret with Adam, I was expecting him to just do his schtick: growling through everything, etc. But I was so impressed with his departure from his normal M.O. I probably wouldn't have known it was him if I hadn't gone in knowing it. Hopefully he'll prove me wrong again. I really love the Chbosky script though. I couldn't stop thinking about it all day.

Posted: 11/23/04 at 5:19pmThe differences in the two times I saw him were extreme. The first time he was just O.K. But the second time (a week before the show closed) he was "acting" pure and sweet and real.

Yeah, so did I. I went 11/23 - so he'd had about a month, and then closing day. DRASTIC differences. But, he only had two and a half weeks of rehearsal whereas everyone else had four, so it's all good.
Rhyming Dialogue#199
Posted: 11/23/04 at 7:04pmAs I've reread the Colubus script I am worried about the rhyming dialogue that is spoken. It reminds me of Dr. Suess. Just let them speak/sing it, it is a Musical after all
