Rob Cavallo, producer of Greenday is behind the new motion picture soundtrack for "RENT".
Whiteboy Spice (a/k/a Anthony Rapp) has stated that the original cast of the show were never truly satisfied with the outcome of the Original Broadway Cast Album and that the movie soundtrack will essentially be an opportunity for all those involved to finally record the songs with a fuller, edgier rock sound.
With Cavallo at the helm I see the perfect opportunity for the movie's producers to capitalize on the show's music and try to release some singles for radio airplay.
Which songs from the show's score do you see as having potential hit status with a good chance of radio airplay besides the obvious choice: "Seasons of Love"?
Discuss.

Posted: 6/17/05 at 9:56amLet's see...obviously "What You Own". I don't see "La Vie Boheme" being a single, because obviously it couldn't get much airplay because of the language. That's the only one I can think of. "Seasons of Love" could be successful.

When RENT opened originally there was an interesting article in Rolling Stone or Billboard-- one of the music publications -- with an executive at a record company. They spoke about why a show like RENT wouldn't really ever find airplay. The chief explanation being that the lyrics are considered too sophisticated for most radio listeners. Sad, but probably true.
I don't expect RENT as a soundtrack to have much better luck with radio play either.

i'm so excited to hear this music with an edgier, more rock-ish sound. i could see this one having a larger rotation than the CR on the ipod.

I still consider the soundtracks for movie musicals as cast recordings. Because when you think about it, it's the cast from the movie recording the songs. It's not like a soundtrack from a movie, where they just put a whole bunch of random songs on a CD that are from the movie - now thats a soundtrack.
Anyway - I don't think Rent songs would get airplay. They are probally too deep, like stated before.

No, it won't get much airplay unfortunately.
Today's radio is all about a "sound" that is easily identified and anything that doesn't fit that sound is rejected. Radio no longer follows the charts and plays what is "popular" now it is teh tail wagging the dog (and has been for the last 20 years or so.) When radio became a prime medium for music in the 1960s and 70s, there was much more variety. Program directors played songs that were popular as well as songs that they felt deserved exposure. Then radio became big busiess. The consultants moved in and convinced stations to delete anything from the play-list that did not fit the "sound."
That is why even though the movie soundtrack Cd of CHICAGO was the #1 selling Cd in the nation for a few weeks in January 2003, no station played any of its songs (except on the "Broadway" programs which are becoming very hard to find indeed.)
Geffen tried to promote the single of "Seasons of Love" from the Broadway cast album of RENT and that didn't go far either.
And ljay889 is correct: the movie soundtrack album of RENT can also be correctly called the movie cast album.
Cast albums are NOT "soundtracks."
Live theatre does not use a "soundtrack." If it did, it wouldn't be live theatre!

Chicago and Rent are two different films the music in Rent caters to a younger audience and i do think if they release "Out Tonight or Today 4 U" you would hear it on the radio.
If they were smart they would release a single next month.

Not to turn this into a Cast Recording Vs. Soundtrack issue but since *you* brought it up please take a look at any CD you have in your music library that is a filmed version of a musical and you will see that they are for the most part labeled ORIGINAL MOTION PICTURE SOUNDTRACK, MOTION PICTURE SOUNDTRACK RECORDING or something along those lines. I have never seen one labeled An Original Movie Cast Recording. A soundtrack is the recorded portion of a MOTION PICTURE regardless if it's a compilation of songs used within a non-musical motion picture or a recording of a motion picture version of a stage musical.
Therefore the upcoming CDs of the movie versions of "RENT" "THE PRODUCERS" and "DREAMGIRLS" will be considered and are ORIGINAL MOTION PICTURE SOUNDTRACKS

And now back to our regularly scheduled discussion.
I for one think that the new SOUNDTRACK to RENT will very easily lend itself to radio airplay due to the production and arrangements being given to the film version of the score.
I see "Without You" and "One Song Glory" as being two very strong contenders. I also see music videos being produced for these along with "Seasons of Love".

ARIF MARDIN made a HUGE mistake in releasing a re-recorded, re-vamped, watered down version of "Seasons of Love" which featured Stevie Wonder and the original cast which IMO paled in comparison to the version used in the actual show. There is always an opportunity to release the new movie version as a single and see if that one becomes a hit.
I think Rob Cavallo, Sony and Revolution have big plans for the movie's SOUNDTRACK.

My vote is for Glory. But then again, my vote is pretty much always for Adam when he's an available option.
And also, I think the reason the Chicago SOUNDTRACK didn't get much airplay is because they were hyping that 'I move on' song, which wasn't very good. I heard it once on the radio, and was like..."Wow, and the world will think THAT is all Chicago has to offer."

CHICAGO and RENT are apples and oranges. Radio stations don't play musical theatre songs let's be realistic, especially not Kander and Ebb. RENT lends itself easily to radio airplay simply because it is a rock score. You can easily pull a song like "Without You" and release it out of the show's context and have it become a hit.

I see "DREAMGIRLS" taking another stab at the pop charts once the film is released.
The show did spawn a huge hit with "And I Am Tellig You I'm Not Going". Two other songs hit modestly on the charts: "When I First Saw You" (it hit bigger on the R&B charts) and "One Night Only".
With the likes of Beyoncé and Usher in the film you can be rest assured on a big push for the show's music on the radio.

"I don't see 'La Vie Boheme' being a single, because obviously it couldn't get much airplay because of the language."
I would have to disagree. I think the reason that this song wouldn't make a good single is because there is so much going on it. Language is not the issue. Radio stations still play Eminem and 50 Cent. Also, RENT is going to have an R rating. People will probably know that there will be some explicit language in the movie.
I think that Without You could be a great single. It's so beautiful and touching. This song also makes sense out of the context of the show.
I also see Out Tonight and What You Own being great singles. Though it most likely won't happen, I would LOVE to see I'll Cover You (Reprise) becoming a single.

"I have never seen one labeled An Original Movie Cast Recording...."
No, but look at the album covers from some of the M-g-M novie soundtracks of the 1950s. I happen to have the Lp of SILK STOCKINGS handy and in the top left corner it reads "AN ORIGINAL CAST ALBUM." True, later on the the credits it does say "recorded directly from the soundtrack" but in the 1950s the phrase "original cast" had more cache.
What is weird though, is that most of the M-g-M soundtrack albums ere in fact "recorded directly from the soundtrack" of the picture (which accounts for their flat boxy sound.)
The famous Capitol Records "soundtracks" of OKLAHOMA!, CAROUSEL, KING AND I and HIGH SOCIETY (among oters) were in fact studio re-recordings featuring the casts of those movies and not actual soundtrack recordings! So technically those are "movie cast" albums. And a lot of the so-called "motion picture soundtrack" albums of non-musicals that are out now feature many songs not even heard in the films and are obviously not true "soundtrack" recordings. Even the famous STAR WARS "soundtrack" was completely re-arranged and re-recorded for release on records.
So if anything it is the term "soundtrack" that needs to be dropped from the vocabulary.
Cast albums are NOT "soundtracks."
Live theatre does not use a "soundtrack." If it did, it wouldn't be live theatre!

The term SOUNDTRACK is hear to stay. And this discussion does not belong on this thread. But it's typical and what's to expect on this board so it really doesn't surprise me. I will call it what it is: a SOUNDTRACK. You can call it whatever *you* feel like it.
Now if you'll excuse me, the soundtrack vs. cast album debate is BORING ME... I'm off to listen to the SOUNDTRACK of "CAROLINE, OR CHANGE".

I for one am lookig forward to the movie soundtrack. Unfortunately the OBCR is lack lustre and doesn't do the show justice. At least as far as I'm concerned. It lacks the energy and raw emotion from the show. But from what I have been told the movie soundtrack will more than make up for that.
I wouldn't mind hearing What you own, One song glory, Halloween, Without you, I'll cover you (reprise), or Out tonight on the radio.Although I dont think Glory or Halloween are long enough to be released as a singles. Unfortunately La Vie Boheme will never be a single due to language. I guess we shall wait and see if any of them are released.

Posted: 6/17/05 at 12:10pmI agree that the OCR lacks ... something. I'm not sure what. Maybe they needed more dialogue on there to make it flow, or maybe teh cast recorded it still reeling from Larson's death. Whatever it is, the show doesn't translate to CD as well is it should. But given Hollywood's tradition over over-orchestrating Broadway scores, I don't hold out a lot of hope for the movie sountrack album either.

Posted: 6/17/05 at 12:20pmI can understand your doubt, as I have felt the same way about it. I held little hope for the movie or the soundtrack, my biggest fear was that they were going to ruin it. But over the past 8 months from what I have been told and the bits and pieces I have seen and heard I can't help but feel confident that they are doing the best movie they can. Granted once it hits the cutting room all bets are off, so it's ultimately a waiting game. I do trust my sources and from what I understand it's all going to be utterly amazing.

The movie soundtrack , I imagine, will probably be only one disk. I got the impression that they are only keeping the main songs and all others (tune up, voicemails, contact, christmas bells) will be gone. Oh well.
