RENT Soundtrack. Yes you read it right...I'm talking about the SOUNDTRACK.

Posted: 6/17/05 at 3:30pmI could see dance re-mixes of Seasons of Love and Today for me.. being popular in clubs. As far as radio, any song that might want to do I think would have to be re-recorded by a popular artist to get airplay. Just my opinion.

Posted: 6/17/05 at 3:48pmRent (the song) will probably be big, I would like Another Day, maybe Out Tonight, and if What you Own would be a single that would be so awesome! I'd cry once i heard it on the radio.

Am I the only one who thinks Without You wouldn't work as a single? I love it within the context of the show, however everything about it is repetitive. I don't mind that, but I don't see it being successful on its own.
Who knows. I've been wrong before, I can be wrong again.

Posted: 6/17/05 at 4:18pmI'm sorry if this has been asked... at least I don't think it has on this particular thread... but has a release date for the soundtrack been announced. I heard somewhere that it might be around Halloween, which seems like a logical timeframe to release it in. Anything official been announced?

Posted: 6/17/05 at 4:18pmWhat I wonder is if there will be a NEW song for the movie. Only reason I bring that up is because they won't be nominated for any awards (best song wise) if there isn't a song actually written for the movie, i.e. "Move On" for Chicago. Not that winning awards is everything, just a thought I had.

'Seasons of Love' is incredibly popular right now especially among middle school and high school choirs. Imagine it's popularity when the movie comes out.
I think 'What You Own' will be good along with 'Rent', 'Without You', and 'I'll Cover You: Reprise'.

Posted: 6/17/05 at 4:30pmI'm not sure about a new song. They do want the movie to be true to the show so I say it's more likely they won't put a new song in. I think Anthony or the other cast members would metion it. Besides, as long as the RENTheads who deserve to see the movie actually see it, I'll be happy.

Wow, the one time it actually is a soundtrack, people still have to argue about it. *eyeroll*
"What I wonder is if there will be a NEW song for the movie."
No. I wouldn't want there to be, especially if it was just to get the Oscar nomination for Best Song (*cough*Phantom). I'm sorry, but I wouldn't want Phil Collins being dragged in and defacing Jonathan Larson's work. Some movies have had the "Songs Inspired By the Movie" soundtrack, so maybe someone will do that, but don't mess with the original.
Anyway, while it may not get much airplay, there's always a few songs from movie musicals that get a lot of mainstream hype when the movie comes out (I Move On from Chicago) and sometimes get their own music videos (Moulin Rouge). Then there's the musicals like Hair where the music is a mainstream hit, and I think that's really more the category Rent could be in. The songs aren't so engrained in the plot that they can be enjoyed independent from the movie.
Songs that I feel have that possibility:
Out Tonight
SOL
ICY
TMOLM
Wanting life but never knowing how

I think this is exactly why it could work for radio. Pop music thrives on incessant repetition. I think One Song Glory has the best shot, because it's a straightforward solo number that mostly works by itself.
"What You Own," however, is the #1 example in Rent of Broadway lyrics being a little too complicated for top 40 radio (not that there isn't pop or rock that approaches that level, it's just not the kind you hear on these stations). "I escape and ape content/I don't own emotion/I rent." Sound like a Britney song yet?

it doesn't have to sound "like britney" to be able to air on the radio.
try thinking out of the box.
people around here to hung up on stereotypes...

Posted: 6/17/05 at 5:49pmI can actually hear the "dance" remix of Seasons of Love, but I really can't hear such an emotional song like that being played at night clubs or something.
#43re: RENT SOUNDTRACK
Posted: 6/17/05 at 10:19pmI can so see "Without You" or "Take me Or Leave Me" being released on the radio, but it would most likely be "Seasons of Love"

My money would be on "SOL" and "Out Tonight". I think "Out Tonight" has the most potential for mainstream single success, because: a) it still makes sense out of the show's context; b) the pop rock genre is very "in", even/especially with a solo female singer (I hate to use this comparison because I think "Out Tonight" is equal parts bubblegum pop and rock, but if you look at the success of Ashlee Simpson, Lindsay Lohan, Avril Lavigne, etc...this song has a similar style - but better
); c) "Out Tonight" has a catchy chorus and memorable melody; d) Rosario's a hot commodity right now, and can sell the single well. It's true.

Posted: 6/17/05 at 11:02pmTGIF, I agree completely. The song is great in the context of the show but if on its own it is very repetitive and lacks a lot of basic radio-pop-song elements that would make it a contender for a radio release.
#46re: RENT SOUNDTRACK
Posted: 6/17/05 at 11:09pmPlus it's too over-dramatic within just a radio-pop-song context, IMHO.

I honestly don't see Rent being played on the radio, as nice as the thought is.
However, I think my life would be complete if I turned on the radio and heard Idina Menzel. So TMOLM would be a nice one (Though I honestly don't think it would work as well as others out of context).
"I'll Cover You (Reprise)" would work really nicely, I'm sure "Seasons of Love" could too.
"Out Tonight" might work.
"Glory" seems a little short, though I could see why one might think it's a good choice, and "Without You" may work, but I think it's better in context, and I think we're lookig for the best song out of context.
Honestly? I don't really see it happening though.

I can say right now that I honestly heard "Christmas Bells" on my favorite modern rock station during Christmastime. From the OBCR. My mother can vouch for me, too. I put on my Rent OBCR in the car, and she was like, "Hey, wasn't this song on the radio?" when we came to Christmas Bells.
I *DO* believe Rent has a shot at radio stations like these.
One Song Glory is the most likely choice for the radio, in my opinion, as well as Out Tonight. Seasons of Love would more likely show up on 'Pop' stations... Without You may be a contender. And honestly, even though the lyrics might be 'sophisticated,' What You Own would be good for the radio.
...Hell, the first time I heard What You Own on the OBCR, I could have sworn I heard it on the radio before. Like, the "Living in America at the end of the millenium" lyrics. I thought perhaps some other band used those lyrics in a song... or I heard that exact song before.
But you know, maybe I was slightly delusional with that one. Ha!
So yeah. Why not? If an OBCR song had been played on my radio station before, why won't the soundtrack?
