Hey. i know its way early, but do you think rent will get oscar nods? i mean we all know what the cast is like since they are all pretty much on the original album...(unlike Phantom or Chicago)...and we have all seen photos and the trailer...do you think they will be up for any oscar nods? i personally think this one will have the same outcome as chicago (rather than phantom...which i personally enjoyed, but all in all it wasnt too popular). what do u think?
If I HAD to predict, I'd be optimistic and say it just might get a few - MAYBE (and I stress MAYBE at this point) Best Picture.
HOWEVER, I agree with the prior posts. At least give it some time, at least til November. And, not to be mean, but before posting something like this, search first, cause I'm pretty sure that there was a thread about this subject a few weeks ago. And probably a few weeks before that, etc, etc.

It is early. Did I read somewhere where a new song has been added. If I am correct, the music or any of the songs won't be elegible becase the nominated songs have to be original.
Actually, I think one of the early drafts of the script included an additional Jonathan Larson song, but obviously even if were new to RENT, it wouldn't have been written just for the film, and thus would not be eligible for the Oscars.
Dolginoff... that would be interesting. But isn't he kind of green?
Anyway, Rent's fate at the Oscars will depend mostly on the failure of other high profile (i.e. big studio) films. Problematic films such as Finding Neverland, Ray and In America have managed nominations in the past, as have strong films with virtual unknowns leading the cast.
It's too early to see what will happen. It's the same for THE PRODUCERS or DREAM GIRLS. People will be wondering.

Whatever happened to all the chatter how C. Columbus was absolutely the wrong director choice and he would ruin the project. Now we're talking Oscar nods?
it is way to early to even start attempting to guess... but i wouldn't be lying if i said i would be thrilled if wilson stepped into the realm as one of the actors to win a tony and an oscar for playing the same character.
Sonme people still feel that way about Chris Columbus.
Anyway, more insight:
Am I the only one here who thinks that Jesse L. Martin may be more likely to get a supporting actor nomination than Wilson Heredia? He's a much more well-known name, is now soloist #2, and will be central to one of the flashiest numbers in the film (Santa Fe) and another that will probably tear down the house (I'll Cover You: Reprise). He also has the advantage of not having one of his big numbers cut - unlike Wilson, who no longer has Contact. And for the liberals who aren't really all that liberal out there, his character is the more masculine of the two gay men.
I also wonder if Tracie Thoms is now at an advantage - being soloist #1 and performing in the intensely choreographed Tango: Maureen.
I think it's way too early to predict. Doesn't mean we can't be optimistic. I know I'd be overjoyed if Anthony Rapp gets lots of attention from this movie. He's a minor film star already. Perhaps this could be his big break. And after all, Chris Columbus did say that Anthony's the heart and soul of Rent. But we'll see, boys...
How can you say it's too early to say it'll win the Oscar? Do you folks remember all those BWW people who predicted BKLYN was going to be the biggest hit ever?

I'm excited as hell for the film, but it's snippets like this one from TVGuide that have me concerned...
Question: My question is about the teaser trailer for Rent that's in theaters now. Like many other Rentheads, I loved it. But I can see how it might be confusing or off-putting to people who haven't seen the original show. Have you seen the trailer and, if so, would you share your opinion? Is it a good teaser, or is it undermining the film's chances of attracting a major audience? — Renthead
FlickChick: I haven't seen Rent on stage, which is probably an asset rather than a liability when answering this question. Frankly, the teaser trailer didn't make me the slightest bit interested in the movie. First and foremost — hold the hate mail, please; this is just my opinion — I found the song "Seasons of Love" trite and forgettable (or maybe it just doesn't play well out of context), and the whole trailer is built around it. And I wasn't taken by the mixture of relatively realistically staged scenes and what look like sequences staged for the theater — members of the cast line up under spotlights and sing directly into the camera. And bear in mind, I like musicals. Most moviegoers under the age of 60 don't, and Rent is aimed at a young audience. I am glad that they've held over a lot of the original stage cast, because that means they can all genuinely sing and dance; I don't think much of Rosario Dawson, who's taking over the role of Mimi Marquez originated by Daphne Rubin-Vega, but maybe she'll surprise me. In all, I can't see the "Seasons of Love" trailer convincing anyone who isn't already so disposed to see the movie version of Rent.
IS the marketing campaign working for people who aren't already familiar with the show? Overall, no.
I totally understand the point of view of that FlickChick persona. I think the seasons of love standing on stage shots that they showed are by far the LEAST appealing thing about the trailers to non-musical lovers. Personally, I think it was a poor choice to show it in the trailer; most people will somewhat respond to the dramatic scenes and all that, but to the non-Rent fan, the part on stage is going to look lame. -And the ending of seasons of love does not exactly leave the trailer with an exciting "let's go see this" bang.
