To roscoe(au):
I don't think you should interpret the "actors" statement in a literal fasion. You are not watching a Twyla Tharp musical. Or was it perhaps i who interpreted your statement not sensing the irony?

Ticket sales have gone down this time of year a number of times for RENT. Primarily because the show's core audience (14-25) have gone back to school. Even WICKED has been slipped just under capacity this last few weeks, but that's not gonna hurt it.
As for some of these comments about the show being pretentious: I really don't understand what part of the show you are alluding to. Yes, I know that RENT is not the best show in the world. But when it came out in 1996, it was unlike anything Broadway had ever seen -- at least in recent years. Most shows were becoming overblown and muddled spectacles from the British invasion. That and revivals were frequent and setting everything back to old school. Then comes this rock musical with edgy/contemporary stories and characters and suddenly everyone realizes it's cool to be funky in musical theatre. This is my perspective anyway. RENT's impression certainly has worn off significantly the last 10 years but it still remains the show that changed my life. Some people might not understand that. But then again, I can't understand how anyone could have their life changed by a midiocre show like HAIR. But I'm getting into another debate...

Good point kevinoes!!
and I had some girl say that to me today actually...she was telling me about the shows she was gonna see in NYC when she goes in May...and she said "but Rent will be closed so I don't get to see that" I assured her that the reason she couldn't get tickets for May was because it's too early...and Rent couldn't possibly be closing....
ridiculous...people...it won't happen soon..that's like saying Wicked will close next week. hahah.

Oh no! I agreed wholeheartedly with everything you said until called Hair mediocre...let's not.
Yes, that's what I think most people miss when they say they wish Rent were dead and buried--I see why it's called dated, I see why it's called badly written, I even see why it's called boring (although I agree with none of those things), but with the hype Rent gets (or once got) and because of its sometimes annoying fandom, people forget how much there is to it. It's got far and away more heart than anything else I've seen lately, and not the artificial "BKYLN" kind. I'm a cynical person so I don't usually like to tout the show's "message" (a word that is unbelievably overused when talking about Rent), but that "message" is there and it changes people--I'm not talking the silly tweens, I'm talking the close-minded homophobes who are dragged to see it and come away having considered for the first time in their lives that homosexuals are people just like they are. If it keeps on doing that, then long live Rent. I understand that (*cough*petty*cough) creative criticsms keep the arts going, but Rent should be a show that forces us to look at the bigger picture. I defy you to name any up-and-coming show that needs the Nederlander and would make a fraction of the contribution Rent continues to make every night.
...and because I do want to put in one more good word for Hair (I too once thought it was a sloppy mess), this article is an interesting read. Completely different topic, of course.

Actually it's really pretentious.
It's ironic that this is YOUR complaint.

WHAT?
To use your words, when it came out in 1968, it was unlike anything Broadway had ever seen.

The moral of the story: to each his own taste. I saw HAIR at CanStage in Toronto and I loathed it. In fact, it upset me how much I hated it. But maybe it was the production...

That's too bad, it's an extraordinary show when done right.
It's just sort of hypocritical to say "RENT did this, but HAIR sucks."
In 2046, RENT will probably be as baffling to people then.

logan, thank you for the smiles in this thread. I enjoyed them.
kevin, it isn't only Rent whose revenues go down this time of year. It happens every year to most shows. September is perhaps the slowest time for Broadway shows, with Jan/Feb a close second. I enjoyed Hair, btw, I can't see how anyone could loathe even that production when there is so much great music in the show. An enjoyable evening of entertainment, especially with Jamie McKnight and Andrew Kushnir.
I don't understand why people make comments about how a particular show should have closed ages ago. If you don't like the show, fine, but what difference does it make to you whether or not it closes? There are certainly shows that I don't enjoy, and don't return to see, but I'd never wish for them to close and to put their cast and crew out of work.

That really hurt my heart. ::teardrop::

I had a few other points about how you probably wouldn't have liked Sweeney Todd anywhere near as much if the actors didn't message you back on MySpace, so really, who are you to complain about obnoxious RENT fans, but at 1am, I wasn't in the mood to articulate them.
And I never called you a bitch. I would never give you that much credit.

except for the fact that you know nothing about me, my taste in music, theatre or how much i communicate with the sweeney todd cast.
And not to mention, I actually met the cast about 6 months after i had seen the show for the first time. The first time i only met one cast member who was very nice got her autograph and left. You can think of me as an obnoxious sweeney fan all you want. The truth is, i'm not and a lot of the sweeney fans aren't nearly as obnoxious as the rent fans.
If you can't handle my opinion or my statements against rent, that's your call. I was actually pretty into it in the third and fourth grade then figured out that there are a lot better things out there.
But enough about me let's discuss whether rent is closing or not...

Considering what you've listed in your profile, it's not exactly difficult to deduce what your taste in music and theatre is.
The truth is, i'm not and a lot of the sweeney fans aren't nearly as obnoxious as the rent fans.
Except it wasn't Rent fans posting death threats against Christian Hoff after the Tonys. Sorry, I think that's much worse an offense than just posting threads about a show that you don't like.
If you can't handle my opinion or my statements against rent, that's your call.
That's my point. You made inflammatory statements about Rent, but you sure as hell didn't make an argument. If you're going to be critical and don't want to be called on your sh*t, learn how to make a decent argument.

SD, what is our point? Can you please provide a coherent sentence as a summation?
Oy. (I'm assuming you meant "your" instead of "our", so here goes:)
Basically, I understand the creative criticisms about Rent; however, I think what a lot of people forget when they make those criticisms is that Rent still changes people (as I said in my post, I don't mean the li'l tweens--I mean narrow-minded people who have never seen a world as accepting as the one on stage in Rent). Call the show dated or boring if that's what you think of it, but I can't imagine any up-and-coming shows that need the Nederlander that would make nearly as much difference as Rent still does.
That, in a word (or a few dozen), is why I don't think Rent "needs to close". I thought I'd made it pretty clear the first time...
