RENT vs. PRODUCERS
re: RENT vs. PRODUCERS#50
Posted: 12/29/05 at 12:13pmPippin, I totally agree. Susan Strohman was able to transpose Producers to film in my opinion SO much better than Chris Columbus. Yes, both movies have their flaws, as any movie will when picked apart by crazed fans, but I felt that the cast of Producers was somehow more connected with their piece. And I think this has everything to do with keeping Susan Strohman onboard. Ok, so it is a silly musical....but that is what it is meant to be. We need to judge these within themselves, not compare them to each other. Obviously Rent is going to be more poignant, obviously the Producers' script is not going to be amazing. But which got their purpose on screen to a greater effect? In my opinion this is definately the Producers.

Posted: 12/29/05 at 7:34pmI don't quite understand why some are casting votes while flatly admitting they haven't seen both. If you're gonna vote without seeing both (or, should I say, The Producers), then I don't see why one would admit it.

RENT was a much better translated stage-to-screen movie. producers seemed like a boring carbon copy to one who has already seen the play.
(By the way- why can't we compare apples to oranges? Has no one ever asked you what your favorite fruit is?)

Happy Early New Year everyone! ("you can take the girl out of Hicksville but you can't take the Hicksville out of the girl") - sorry had to :)

The Producers
I saw both movies. I enjoyed both movies. But RENT was just OK on screen. Well, better then OK, but the stage version is VASTLY better and I didn't think the film quite caught what RENT was reaching for. The Producers was VERY enjoyable and worked better as a film overall. This could be because it was adapted from a film into a musical, then back to film. I don't know, it just flowed and worked a lot better I thought. But RENT is the better musical of the two I think, while the Producers was the better movie.

Rent.
I've seen both (wow guys, what's the point in applying if you haven't seen both movies? -_-') and I enjoyed both of them a lot. I am planning on purchasing them when they come out on DVD so I can watch them over and over again. Rent had it flaws, but it had a 'movie spark' for me. The Producers had a small one, but my preferance was Rent. Loved both though, so picking is hard.

The Producers
When I walked out of the theater, I was like "I liked this better than RENT even though I loved RENT."

One BIG vote for The Producers.
It was simply a better film.
Which movie I actually enjoyed more is debatable but overall I think Susan Stroman did a much better job than Chris Columbus translating from stage to the screen. Where she lacked experience working with a camera, she made up for by creating entertaining, funny scenes/ dance numbers that remained as true as possible to the Broadway show.
I was looking for movie versions of the musicals that I love and The Producers delivered more so than Rent.

Play-wise, it's almost impossible to compare, because they're so different. The Producers was hilarious, but Rent was...so raw, and *true*.
Movie-wise, I pick Rent only because of the acting. I think using mainly the OBC was a great choice, and it made the movie for me. I love Nathan Lane and Matthew Broderick, but I don't think they captured the *essence* of their characters the way the cast of Rent did.
The Producers might have been a better film- that's debatable. But I enjoyed Rent *so* much more. And, since this is an opinion thread, I go with Rent.

re: RENT vs. PRODUCERS#72
Posted: 1/2/06 at 12:41amI like both, but I definately like RENT more.
re: RENT vs. PRODUCERS#73
Posted: 1/2/06 at 1:23amJust saw Producers so now I'm allowed to vote. I liked Producers for what it was, an entertaining 2 hours. But my vote goes to Rent for being an entertaining 2 hours whenever I want it to be because I like it enough to go over and over!

I'm crazy about both...
but my vote goes to the Producers - I loved it so much. I want to send a Valentine to Mel Brooks and Susan Stroman.
