The Producers
...and I think any vote from someone who flatly admits to not having seen both should be ruled null.

Posted: 12/28/05 at 8:26pmI don't think my vote will really count...I've seen the RENT movie and I've seen the Producers on stage, and judging from that, I like RENT better. Even before I had seen the movie and had just listened to the cast recording, I liked it better than the Producers...that show just doesn't really do much for me. But, who knows, maybe I'll be impressed by the movie.

I've seen both, fyi, and even though I think The Producers was an enjoyable movie, Rent was much better. It really played with my emotions, plus I just liked the movie more than Producers, so I pick rent.
P.S. I think this post was made to see which of the movies we (as in the board) liked better. If you can't come to terms with that, than just don't post. Simple as that.

RENT
Easy question. Producers is funny, but I love RENT.
I remember days
Or at least I try
But as years go by
They're sort of haze
And the bluest ink
Isn't really sky
And at times I think
I would gladly die
For a day of sky

Marquise - if there is no point to this thread then why did you click on it. From your point of view you should have just skipped it and moved along.
Lets put it this way Rent is a Musical, The Producers is a Musical, Musicals have songs in them - The songs from Rent are incredible and innovative and the songs from The Producers suck, so I guess my choice would be Rent

Posted: 12/28/05 at 8:56pmRENT was far more enjoyable than the Producers for me. I mean, the Producers was good, but it just wasn't the same as the original movie/show.

THE PRODUCERS.
Flawed but fun. RENT isn't even in the same league. Not even close. It's like, at the hot dog stand watching the game. It's not even on the field or in the dugout or on the bleachers.
It's at the hot dog stand.

Can I choose both? They each have their amazing qualities, and each have their flaws. I love them equally.
But Rent would win out I think, because Adam Pascal is my god.

I don't know how anyone can refer to The Producers as cinematic art, it felt like I was watching a filmed stage show, with actors singing to the camera, and acting inappropriately over-the-top.
Yes, Rent is very much flawed, but at least it can be called a film, a very much enjoyable and touching film.
My vote goes for RENT.

I think trying to compare the two films is completely idiotic.
They're entirely different genres, they took entirely different approaches. This is apples to oranges.

Posted: 12/28/05 at 11:40pmRENT. I have seen it as both a stage show and the movie and although it is flawed at some points I really like it. I have never seen the Producers on stage or in the movie theater.

Posted: 12/29/05 at 10:38amI saw both Rent and the Producers, but I think Rent was better. For me the Producers started to drag a little especially during the courtroom scene.

my breakdown- rent has the better source material. (duh!! hello, pulitzer prize) but IMO didn't translate to screen to well. The producers is a silly little musical but was great fun with good numbers and inspired direction. I really appreciate Strohman's choice to unabashadely make it an old fashioned MGM styly musical with no excuses or invented reasons for the actors to sing.
so my vote- producers.
