LuvtheEmcee,
I have a question - who do you think is receiving the messages put forth by the cut? I am just wondering because I would assume that in most audiences a large portion of the audience wouldn't have seen the original production and may never see it. Are you assuming that the messages are being sent to the actors and theatre going portion of the audience?

And if there is a school that believes their audience/community would be uncomfortable with homosexual kissing then they simply SHOULDN'T DO THE DAMN SHOW.
This reflects my opinion on every show edited for content. If you can't do the show as written, you shouldn't be doing the show in the first place.
Cabaret HAS been done unaltered in high schools before. My father's high school was the first to do it in the state and while it was a huge scandal, it was like 1972 and Roe v. Wade hadn't even happened yet. There's no excuse in this day and age to object to Rent, when homosexuality and drug addiction are regularly portrayed on network TV during the "family hour."

I mean, you're right about not knowing what the audience is coming in with, but I think the people who are saying it's perpetuating the taboos hit the nail on the head, you know? It's about "we're not showing this because it's not okay." Sometimes what goes unsaid and unshown can speak louder than that which is.

Posted: 6/23/07 at 11:05pmIs this the one in Mansfield being put on by the Uncommon Theatre Company? I was actually gonna try out for this, but it's way in Western MA and the commute would be hell. The music director used to work at my school! Best of luck to the production; wish I could have done it!

LuvtheEmcee,
I understand your point. And I agree what goes unshown can speak louder than what is shown... However, aren't they still showing a loving relationship between two men? I am just not sure you can condem the changes without seeing how they play out. I leave you with this question, would you rather the relationship not be shown at all rather than keep the meat of the relationship without the outward physical expression?
I'm with you on the Maureen / other woman kiss. Why leave one in and take the other one out? Maybe because the Maureen kiss is emotionless? Now that I have a problem with. What kind of message is THAT sending? That might be more hurtful than cutting out a kiss between two people having a relationship.
Still... I've seen the high school age group go crazy over Rent. To give them the opportunity to present it to their peers is a great idea. Especially since I believe that the majority of the theatre audience will never have the opportunity to see the show. Hopefully, the final cuts will do the piece justice and not compromise the meaning or message of the show. This is apparently a work in progress.

you really should keep the kiss, the show is about diversity and such
Are you for real?

There doesn't seem to be anything equivocal about these cuts; think about what that one says, you know? I think your question sort of misses my point, and that's why. Why on earth would I want them to FURTHER water down the show by taking out the meat of the relationship? I don't know where you got an idea that would make you want to ask me that, since I basically agree with your second paragraph about the gender/sexuality issue. That's what I'm saying. It's not about whether or not they've seen the original production and hence will or will not be able to say "oh, that was in the original and its missing," it's about what this version will say as a stand-alone piece. It's still capable of putting forth a message about what's acceptable, even to people who can't compare what's been changed -- the male/male versus female/female kiss is a perfect example.
