why do you think they chose this particular wig for ROSE in this production (rather than the traditional curly look)?
its curious because its so much like Patti's *real* hair...
there must be some thought behind it.
re: ROSE's wig#2
Posted: 7/17/07 at 8:13amGood question and I actually have no idea. Normally my reasoning would be because it was the real Rose's original style but that doesn't hold true. I'm leaning towards fitting in with Patti's real hair.
re: ROSE's wig#2
Posted: 7/17/07 at 8:27amI am not sure what is meant by the "traditional curly look." The Merm's hair was basically her own style, Lansbury's was slightly marcelled, but nothing more, Daly had a page-boy like LuPone does and Peters was, well, Peters.

oh, you are correct.
i guess i was thinking of Merman's, Peter's & LuPone's Ravinia look.

LuPone's "hair and wig designer," as well as "personal assistant," "dresser," and I believe "costumer" are listed in the credits.
So yes, I assume it's a wig.

Posted: 7/17/07 at 10:01amI don't know why but her hair in this was distracting for me... I would have liked it better if she wore what she did at the ravinia.

Posted: 7/17/07 at 10:39amThe hairstyle that Patti is sporting in GYPSY was inspired by Louise Brooks. It was very popular in the 20's and 30's.

Louise "Lulu" Brooks. Her hairstyle was also the inspiration for Liza Minnelli's Sally for the film-version of CABARET; Catherine Zeta-Jones' Velma for the film-version of CHICAGO and now Patti LuPone for GYPSY:

Didn't Rosalind Russell wear a style similar to the "Brooks Bob" in the movie?

Nope, judging by the little bit of hair we actually do see (she's always in hats).
re: ROSE's wig#12
Posted: 7/17/07 at 12:19pmI hated it when I first saw the pics of it. But I liked it a lot when I saw it live. Now when I look pics of the Ravinia wig.. I don't like it anymore.
re: ROSE's wig#13
Posted: 7/17/07 at 2:54pmI never liked the look of the Ravinia wig, but her new look seems much more natural and in person I thought it "worked" or whatnot.

Posted: 7/17/07 at 4:34pmI'm pretty sure that Roz was wearuing a Louis Brooks-style hairdo in "You'll Never Get Away From Me" but I saw the movie so long ago that it's a blurry memory.
re: ROSE's wig#15
Posted: 7/17/07 at 4:42pmI like this hair a lot. Much more than the Ravinia wig, that's for sure.
It was awesome. - theaterkid1015

Nope. Rosalind Russell sports this short curly hairdo throughout the entire filme (no Louise Brooks "bob" to be found on her head in any portion of the film). Just scanned the DVD (sorry -- can't post screencaps) for confirmation, but here are some photo proofs of the hairdo she wore in the film:

The "Rose's Turn" I've "seen" from Ravinia as opposed to the one I saw live leads me to believe the wigs matched LuPone's interpretation of the role in each incarnation.
Curly @ Ravinia because she did "RT" more strip-tease influenced/flirtatious as opposed to the less attractive bob @ City Center where its more of a mockery of the burlesque performance.

i *do*feel like the Ravinia wig wouldve been more fun to draw.
