The original film was so great and this show is so poweful live (the latest Broadway version aside!), that the very least I hope we get from the TV Movie is more exposure for the marvelous material to those who have never read the book or seen a stage production.
I'll be watching...but I don't like what I'm seeing in the trailer so far. Let's hope Audra and Phylicia can save it!

Posted: 1/23/08 at 2:12pmwow, mellodramatic much?? This looks like a soap opera. All I remember from seeing this cast on Bway was everyone laughing in the audience at P. Diddy trying to act. They were HYSTERICAL.

This looks like a soap opera.
The review I saw from Sundance said the same thing, that the music, camera angles and some of the other direction choices made it appear WAY too daytime drama. However, it also said that Rashad's and McDonald's performances are well-preserved. And that Mr. Combs isn't great but didn't ruin it (which pretty much echoed my thoughts on him when I saw it onstage).

"Does it dry out, like a raisin in the sun?
Or maybe it sags, like a heavy load."
I'd say, from that clip, it's sagging.

Diddy talks too much.
ETA: I've got the original movie in my Tivo lineup, but we haven't watched it yet. From what I can tell, this looks really dramatic and Diddy has that stupid look on his face through the entire thing. I think we'll skip it.

Posted: 1/23/08 at 4:28pmThis looks promising. ALL TRAILERS tend to be a little melodramatic...don't let that ruin the film before you all get a chance to actually see it. Weigh in your opinions for the film when you've actually seen it not based on one single trailer.

I'm really excited for it. I think the trailer is awesome, and it makes Sean Combs look like an actor after all.
