Posted: 5/22/04 at 5:50pmOk, I know we have all of these "What CDs should I get?" posts, blah, blah. But, I am compiling a list of CDs that only people who are completely obsessed with Broadway would have. Like shows that lasted about two seconds and most people haven't heard of, that type of thing. I know most of you know many of these shows, because you are always talking about shows I have never heard of! If you could help me out it would be greatly appreciated! Thanks!

Posted: 5/22/04 at 6:00pmA lot of people haven't heard of anything Jason Robert Brown has written (Songs for a New World, The Last 5 Years, Parade), which is a shame, because he is such a great writer. Bat Boy didn't last that long either, but I suppose you're looking for some things that are more obscure.

Ewww... you wanna know what's random... David Spencer's PHANTOM OF THE OPERA CD. It's at AMAZON. It's the most kiddy, cartoon version of PHANTOM I've ever heard... think preschool version only slightly entertaining with a Disney like score, only nobody at Disney would ever write it....
It's out of stock, but you can listen to clips....

hmmm ... get 'the fix.' it's something not very many people have heard of because it was only in london .. the whole thing is not GREAT, but there are definitely a few great songs on it. John Barrowman can be off-key at times, but is good for the part .. Kathryn Evans as the mom is completely awesome. It's about .. the glam side of politics, i guess you might say.. :) check it out, listen to the clips on amazon, if you like it, it's a good addition that not too many people have.
also hey it's directed by sam mendes and he wouldn't pick up a bad project, right? ![]()

Here's a list of some of my favorite random recordings...
Ruthless (Laird), The Grass Harp (Richardson), The It Girl (McKibbins), Thou Shalt Not (Connick), Wings (Lunden), After The Fair (Ward), Little By Little (Ross), Trouble In Tahiti (Bernstein), Coco (Previn), Twelfth Night (Tesori), Applause (Strouse), Sugar (Styne), I Am Anne Frank (Cohen), How Now Dow Jones (E. Bernstein), Wildcat (Coleman), Christine (Fain), Let 'Em Eat Cake (Gershwin), Of Thee I Sing (Gershwin), Balancing Act (Goggin), Dear World (Herman), Fiorello (Bock), New Girl In Town (Merrill), Grind (Grossman), Goldilocks (Anderson), Allegro (Rodgers), Me & Juliet (Rodgers), A Tree Grows In Brooklyn (Schwartz), Desert Song (Romberg), Rags (Strouse), Annie Warbucks (Strouse), Nick & Nora (Strouse), All American (Strouse), Pipe Dream (Rodgers), Purlie (Geld), Centennial Summer (Kern), Very Good Eddie (Kern), High Spirits (Grey/Martin), As Thousands Cheer (Berlin), Late Nite Comic, Leave It To Jane (Kern), The New Moon (Romberg), Tenderloin (Bock), Golden Boy (Strouse), Bajour (Marks), Collette Collage (Schmidt), Weird Romance (Menken)...
Some are more random than others, and some are "cult-y" kind of popular, but after looking through my collection for you, I think I gave you plenty to start with! Some are good, some are awful, and some have only a song or two worthwhile, but all are recordings that most people won't have in their collections.

Posted: 5/22/04 at 11:11pmElegies:A Song Cycle and A New Brain. William Finn is a musical genius. He writes the best ballads in the history of ballad-writing. I rave about him to my friends and they go "HUH?" I feel so misunderstood. someone feel my pain!

Posted: 5/23/04 at 12:52amI've only heard Falsettos, but I'll support you, margie. :)
#12re: Random CDs!!!
Posted: 5/23/04 at 2:40pmA New Brain is wonderful. It is one of the few shows I never got tired of performing. I'm not as big a fan of Elegies, though. Falsettos is brilliant! One of the most touching and funny scores in the last few decades. It should be performed more often.

I never finished listening to Which Witch. It has some decent music, but from what I heard the production was just way too bizarre and poorly staged to survive. I like a couple of songs from The Fix, but not the whole thing.
Interesting little fact. In the production of A New Brain I did (I was the Minister), the woman who played Gordo's mother used to babysit William Finn when she was a teenager.

Also try Footlight. They have a great selection and their prices are MUCH more reasonable than Colony. You can also find some of these CDs on Ebay.
