I've been curious about this for awhile but never got around to asking. Last night I saw IMPORTANT HATS at MTC. There was a smattering of empty seats 5 mins before curtain then random people walked in and the usher/house manager started directing the people to the empty seats. I felt as though these people obviously didn't have tickets and were there to fill all the seats. I've noticed this before at the Laura Pels also but they have a general admission line.

Does anyone know if these are ticketed patrons or if it's some kind of outreach program? I'm honestly confused because I've never seen general admission as an option for Roundabout.

They're likely either stand-by patrons or volunteers. Folks that don't have a ticketed seat, but can grab one that's available.

If you past-date a ticket, exchange a subscriber seat, or get a papered ticket/comp, that is when you might get GA at Roundabout AFAIK.

Roundabout subscribers can exchange a subscriber ticket for a general admission pass that they can try to use at any performance. At least, that's how it worked when I was a subscriber. GA patrons were almost always seated very close to curtain, within a minute or two of a performance's start time. As for MTC, they might have a similar option for subscribers, or as the other poster said, they could be seating volunteer ushers in those seats. Or they might be last-minute ticket buyers from the cancellation line, if a show is sold out.

That makes total sense. I do get that ushers are seated by the house manager in some of the seats and see them do so. I've never had to past-date a ticket so that never occurred to me. I just wanted to make sure I wasn't missing out on some cheap discount method of seeing a show.
