Inspired by the recent ranking of best picture winners over on Rotten Tomatoes (THE GODFATHER being #1), I thought it would be interesting to see what the majority of us consider to be the best musical winners.
Assign a number value for all of the winners, 1-10. Halves are allowed. In about a weeks time I will calculate the numbers and post the results.
Clearly the result of mid-winter boredom, and curiousity.
Enjoy, and please do this via PM.

No, you don't make a top ten list, you assign a quality grade on a scale of one to ten for each show and them PM it to Munk.
can I pretend that Piazza won over Spamalot?
Can I pretend ANY of the other nominees won over Spamalot? :P
Haha, I was tempted to do something snarky like substitute PIAZZA for SPAMALOT or something, but no.
You aren't ranking them, you're rating them. And not 10...all of them.
Assign a grade. 5.5, or 7 or 10. Out of 10. And be CRITICAL. Be OVERLY CRITICAL.
And please, PM only.
Very interesting numbers so far. Keep them coming.

Fascinating-- I wonder how this will look. Obviously, more recent musicals will rate higher as more people have seen them. I paused at Will Rogers Follies as I know a lot of people who know it only from the album don't like it much--but I thought it was a wonderful night at the theatre when all was said and done.
Can we skip over shows we aren't very familiar with?
It seems the fair thing to do.
Yes, what do we do if we don't know certain shows so well?

I don't see Tarzan listed.

I was surprised...I've seen almost all of thos shows in some form or other...pretty crazy.
I only gave 10s to three shows, most of them older. I was very critical, Mr. Munk! :)

I was also surprised. The only one I skipped was Redhead which was the one show on the list I haven't seen in one form or another.

"Surprised," Margo? Really? You? (unless you meant that you were surprised that there was one you hadn't seen)

Seeing the list like that... it doesn't look that big for some reason. I know it hasn't been around as long as the Oscars, but... I dunno.
While I definately havn't seen all the shows, I am a plesantly suprised at the number I have seen (and the ones I have heard on top of it).
'Redhead' is actually the one show I'd love to go back in a time machine and see.
Don't worry guys, I've not forgotten about this. I've just been horrendously busy.

What's the point when you've left out a lot of musicals, such as Follies, The Most Happy Fella, New Girl in Town, A Class Act, Grand Hotel, etc?
Because FOLLIES, THE MOST HAPPY FELLA, NEW GIRL IN TOWN, A CLASS ACT, and GRAND HOTEL didn't win the Tony award for best musical, genius.
All right, Munk. I gave it a shot. Just like the "rank the Best Pictures" list on the OT Board a few weeks ago. As least I have seen all the Best Picture winners. But... Since I have seen relatively few of these original Broadway productions, I am basing my list on any production (Broadway, tour, regional, amateur, high school, etc.) I have seen of the musical and how it rates for me. It's more about the show itself, with a little bit about the actual production I saw... since that DOES affect what we think of a show. I'm still ranking it on the following criteria:
1. Book, Music & Lyrics
2. Originality
3. Longevity (with ME, not with the world)
4. Emotional connection
5. Overall entertainment value
6. The physical production(s) I have seen of that show
The second list is of the shows that I (admittedly) have NEVER seen staged fully. So I'm rating them solely based on a cast recording, plus a synopsis (if I know it). I don't take this secondary ranking very seriously since it's only based on my limited familiarity.
