Posted: 12/5/06 at 5:59pmWhat are some of musical theatres darkest shows? I am looking for something to do for my directing class and I want to do a Tim Burton twist on whatever I do. Sweeney Todd seems to be obvious, but perhaps too easy. So, what musicals do you see as dark or possibly dark?

See What I Wanna See - though I don't think the rights are available.
Why don't you just pick something you're drawn to rather than deceiding to make something dark for not real reason?
You could do "Songs For A New World" because it lends itself well to open interpretations, though I'm not a fan of the score.

Pippin?
From what I've heard, it was conceived as a rather dark show, but toned down some. I don't really get the show though.

Posted: 12/5/06 at 7:25pmNo I don't want to make something dark just for the sake of making it dark. And I plan to choose something I'm drawn to. But I want lots of options to let the perfect one speak to me. I want to take an already dark plot and put it together with a twisted visual look and sound ....aka making it my own.

The position I am in is that I am a music theatre major and I have to take a directing class...for that I have to put together a 15 min. scene from a play or musical...seeing as I am a Music Theatre major, I will probably do a musical.
What is Marie Christine...not familiar with it.

Posted: 12/5/06 at 7:50pmJust check it out on amazon.com. It's a retelling of Medea by Michael John LaChiusa (See What I Wanna See, Wild Party, etc.). You could Lippa's "The Wild Party" though it doesn't involve legit singing. But it can be very dark and sexy.
