What are some of musical theatres darkest shows? I am looking for something to do for my directing class and I want to do a Tim Burton twist on whatever I do. Sweeney Todd seems to be obvious, but perhaps too easy. So, what musicals do you see as dark or possibly dark?

I love that show too, I'd have to get a score and such.

See What I Wanna See - though I don't think the rights are available.
Why don't you just pick something you're drawn to rather than deceiding to make something dark for not real reason?
You could do "Songs For A New World" because it lends itself well to open interpretations, though I'm not a fan of the score.

Pippin?
From what I've heard, it was conceived as a rather dark show, but toned down some. I don't really get the show though.

No I don't want to make something dark just for the sake of making it dark. And I plan to choose something I'm drawn to. But I want lots of options to let the perfect one speak to me. I want to take an already dark plot and put it together with a twisted visual look and sound ....aka making it my own.
what position are you in that you get to direct musicals? is it just me that's damned for all time?

Same with Wild Party.
Do the other one.

The position I am in is that I am a music theatre major and I have to take a directing class...for that I have to put together a 15 min. scene from a play or musical...seeing as I am a Music Theatre major, I will probably do a musical.
What is Marie Christine...not familiar with it.

Just check it out on amazon.com. It's a retelling of Medea by Michael John LaChiusa (See What I Wanna See, Wild Party, etc.). You could Lippa's "The Wild Party" though it doesn't involve legit singing. But it can be very dark and sexy.
