I'm guessing you're referring to Sally's dress in FOLLIES. Yes?

Is it intermission?
"You travel alone because other people are only there to remind you how much that hook hurts that we all bit down on. Wait for that one day we can bite free and get back out there in space where we belong, sail back over water, over skies, into space, the hook finally out of our mouths and we wander back out there in space spawning to other planets never to return hurrah to earth and we'll look back and can't even see these lives here anymore. Only the taste of blood to remind us we ever existed. The earth is small. We're gone. We're dead. We're safe." -John Guare, Landscape of the Body

I need someone to sit down and explain tome just what the hell is this obsession with the color of that damn dress. It strikes me as contrived.

Red dress is now PINK

Personally, I found that a red dress for Sally was completely at odds with her character from any number of viewpoints as revealed by Sally herself. She's a bit frumpy, and so she'd surely try to gussie-up for the reunion, but RED didn't seem to be a choice she'd have made at home. Maybe that's where some people have had difficulty with the costumer's-director's decision. It seemed like a choice based more on somebody wanting Ms. Peters to be watched as a performer, rather than to be almost invisible as a character. That's just my point of view.

Ask a designer... like, well, me, for example.

I never liked the idea of her in a red dress. That's not her character. Her character is a housewife from Arizona who thinks getting a fancy dress from Belk's will do the trick. She's someone who's still 20 trapped in a 50 year old body, she's all pastel flowers and arrested development. That's not red. Red is a powerful, assured colour, better suited for Phyllis. But not Sally.

I almost pooed.
"If this is going to be a Christian nation that doesn't help the poor, either we have to pretend that Jesus was just as selfish as we are, or we've got to acknowledge that He commanded us to love the poor and serve the needy without condition and then admit that we just don't want to do it." -Stephen Colbert

Thank GOD!

It was always a lazy costuming choice: It was wrong for Sally's character and violated a #1 rule for Costuming Divas: namely that if you have two leading ladies and one of them (Phyllis) is going to come out at the end of the show in a stunning red dress and dazzle the audience in a production number, then you don't have the other one start off the show in an even more stunning red dress.

Now, how was the new staging for Lucy/Jessie?

Oh, thank God!

For a second there, I thought you were saying someone had digitally altered the dress Scarlett wears to Ashley's birthday party.

I almost vomited.

I don't know why people thought the color was the big problem, it may not be right for the reason joey said, but for me it was the flattering style of the dress and not just the color that was improper.. And the debate was obviously NOT "settled", since they changed it.

I agreed with that too, CPD.

But I don't think we were the ones who persuaded Eric Schaeffer and Gregg Barnes to change the dress. I think it was when Ben Brantley said:

“Why am I here?” asks Sally, and she’s right to ask, especially since Ms. Peters, a vibrant knockout in a tight red dress, is hardly the frumpy, banal Sally who is described to us. Ms. Peters exudes such exotic star shine, you feel that Sally’s real tragedy wasn’t that she lost the man she loved (that would be Ben, who married Phyllis), but that she wasn’t allowed to spend her life with a follow-spot before throngs of adoring fans.

It's definitely a much frumpier dress now! With some kind of flowery print on it too.

From ATC

kind of rose colored number that has a strange print on it, with spaghetti straps and a full, frilly skirt. Dorothy Collins would've approved of this costume, I'm thinking.

Ah, Ms P. agrees!
joey, maybe Schaefer and Barnes listened to Brantley, but Brantley listened to us (I'm sure)!

Is the pink dress in a similar vein as Kerry Butler's in Catch Me if You Can?

OMG I am so happy that now that our biggest problems in the world are resolved...we can go on to more important things...that dress!

Red dress is now PINK

I do like that they didn't go full on frumpy with it. It's a cute, pink dress with a few light flowers along the skirt part of the dress. It's cut prety similarly to the red one, but has a slightly more fitted...what's the word, the part around the boobs? One of you queens must know. Anyway, it's flattering. I didn't have big issues to begin with with the red dress, but whatevs.

Much is made of the fact that Sally thought long and hard about what she was going to wear to the reunion. She wants to stand out and be noticed, hence the justification for the red dress. But I agree that it was wrong, much too sophisticated. When Donna McKechnie played Sally at Paper Mill, she wore a semi-frilly yellow dress, which I thought was perfect. It looked like something you'd pick up in Phoenix and it screamed "I'm cheerful! I'm happy! My life is all sunshine and rainbows!" Which is exactly what Sally wants everyone to think when she arrives at the party.
