Reese Witherspoon & a Wicked Movie?

Reese Witherspoon & a Wicked Movie?

Under 10 things you didn't know about Reese:

4. She'd like to make a movie about some real... witches. Reese loves the Broadway musical Wicked [a takeoff on the Wonderful Wizard of Oz] and thinks it deserves a run on the big screen.

----------------------------------------------------------
It's a picture of Idina as Elphaba. I love Reese Witherspoon, but I think I would be really disappointed if at least Idina and Cheno weren't in the movie. Anyway, sorry if a Wicked post upsets anyone...

No need to apologize, korenglish. I don't think people have a problem with intelligent Wicked posts. re: Reese Witherspoon & a Wicked Movie?

I agree. If a Wicked movie were to be made, I'd be really disappointed if Idina and Kristen weren't in it.

Reece would make a perfect "movie" Glinda... if she could sing it. Even if Reece has a decent voice (which I have no idea), I would be surprised if she could rise to the demands of Glinda's music. Unless (as with other movies), they were to adapt all of Glinda's music to fit her range... AGAIN, assuming she could sing at all.

I do know that it was written into Kristin's original contract that if a movie were to be made, they would either have to use her as Glinda... or buy her out of her contract (which usuallly means a lot of money would be paid out for that option).

re: Reese Witherspoon & a Wicked Movie?

I'd really hate for them to have to alter the musical score in order to hire some well-known Hollywood actress that can't handle the singing. Unfortunately, it's entirely too common in movie musicals.

ETA: Wow best12bars, you and I were on the same track with this.

re: Reese Witherspoon & a Wicked Movie?

This strikes me as odd...I read an interview (or saw something on E!) where Reese said that she doesn't want to play the "dumb blonde" type that she played in Legally Blonde, and that she wants a variety of roles to show her versatility...Glinda is alot like Elle Woods...

re: Reese Witherspoon & a Wicked Movie?

i have to agree with all. Reese would be a good "movie Glinda" but it would be sad w/o Kristin and Idina.
Kristin Chenoweth could barely control a Great Dane she trotted onto the stage. "Great, they gave me a dog that weighs five times what I do", she quipped. For the record, she weighs 93 pounds, and has a Maltese.

re: Reese Witherspoon & a Wicked Movie?

She's going to be in that movie coming out with Mark Ruffalo, right? Awww, Reese is awesome. More reasons to love her.

re: Reese Witherspoon & a Wicked Movie?

it would be pointless to make the movie without Idina and Kristen, just like it would be pointless to make the RENT movie w/out any of the original cast,I don't think anyone would go see it.

re: Reese Witherspoon & a Wicked Movie?

theatrebabe, I think that you're overestimating the draw of Kristin and Idina. I agree that if a movie is made, they should reprise their roles, but the fact remains that most of the country has no idea who they are.

re: Reese Witherspoon & a Wicked Movie?

Witherspoon also owns and operates a production company. Her saying she'd like to see a musical version of 'Wicked' might not mean she's saying she wants to play one of the roles.

Actually Kristin and Idina don't get the role, they have first refusal. So if either of them don't want to play the part again, it will go to someone else.
I am a firm believer in serendipity- all the random pieces coming together in one wonderful moment, when suddenly you see what their purpose was all along.

re: Reese Witherspoon & a Wicked Movie?

I disagree theatrebabe... I think that if there were "famous" actors and actresses playing the roles in Wicked, I guarantee that people would go watch the movie. I do admit that Idina and Cheno's popularity is increasing, especially with their new movies and other projects they are doing... but still, I agree wtih kringas when he says that 'most of the country has no idea who they are'. Weird, isn't it? And we have tons of screaming Idina and Wicked fans just on this board alone...

re: Reese Witherspoon & a Wicked Movie?

JohnPapa, that's how I interpreted it as well. I didn't think Reese was saying she wanted to be Glinda, but I was worried about any potential Glindas in Hollywood. I mean, I can see Hollywood producers jumping to cast someone like Jessica Simpson as Glinda, because she's blond, ditzy and can "sing".

re: Reese Witherspoon & a Wicked Movie?

I would like to see a movie based on the book, not a movie version of the musical. If that ever happened Reese would be an awesome Glinda.

re: Reese Witherspoon & a Wicked Movie?

ha... sure Jessica Simpson can "sing"

That's how I first interpreted the information, but then I reread it... and I wasn't sure if she wanted to be in the show, or if she wanted to produce the show. Either way, I know she saw it in LA... and I'm glad she liked it. Maybe doing the tour will spark some interest for producers to want to make the movie.

re: Reese Witherspoon & a Wicked Movie?

Just to elaborate on JohnPopa's post -

Reese has her own production company, Type A Productions. She's one of the few females in Hollywood who owns a production company that actually produces movies (Drew Barrymore being a notable exception). I can totally see Reese backing this project. She's very vocal about making movies that her daughter can be proud of. This would be right up Reese's alley. If she were to decide to be a part of the movie, I could totally see her as Glinda, though I have no idea of her singing skills. She has said that she's not adverse to the idea of doing another "dumb blonde" role, or a more box-office friendly role. She understands that part of her job is making movies that people want to see.

re: Reese Witherspoon & a Wicked Movie?

There is a time stipulation on Kristin's "first right of refusal" to repeat her Glinda on film. I have never heard that Idina had the same clause in her contract. At any rate, those stipulations will expire long before a film of WICKED is ever made.

re: Reese Witherspoon & a Wicked Movie?

Kristin herself was actually the one that said in a print interview they would have to pay her a whole lot of money if they made a movie version of it without her. (I wish I could remember what magazine!)

She could have been "joking" about that, I guess. And the article was a while back, not recent. It makes sense there would be a limitation on that clause though... If they make the movie 20 years from now, she'd be more like Morrible material...
