Glinda in the book is a MUCH smaller role than in the musical. If they kept true to Wicked the book, it's the story of Elphie and how Galinda fit's into HER life . . . it's NOT the story of the Witches of Oz, like the musical. Galinda's only there during the Shiz part of the story and appears a couple more times later on.
I, too, would prefer to see a movie version of the book -- non-musical. It would be wonderful to see the musical made into a movie with all the special effects and everything, but I find the original concept more compelling.
Well, the book sequel is coming this month and you know how the movie folks love sequel possibilities. Due to the main character, there is no way that the second book could be made to follow a movie of the musical.
Idina: This is called a kielbasa!
Pianist: It's called a 'KA-basa'...
Idina: It's called a kabasa? Oh, a KIEL-basa's a sausage, isn't it? I CAN PLAY THAT TOO! HULLO!!
I read the sequel -- it's quite interesting, but not as good as "Wicked." I didn't see anything in the 2nd book that lends itself to musical adaptation.
If they do a movie based on the book, then yes I would love to see Reese in the role. But as far as it being a musical, it IS Kristin's role. She's been doing quite a few movies lately, and while she's not making anywhere near the salary of Reese, movie audiences are becoming aware of who she is. Just because Reese owns a Production company is no reason to fork over the role to her as a vanity project.

Oops, sorry about the mix up! :X But I still don't think it would make a good movie. Maybe if they did it based on the book, without music. Like some other people suggested.
Can I just say my poor little heart almost had an attack. REESE WITHERSPOON! OMG! Talk about destroying Glinda with her brainlessness.
For one thing... lay off the musical movies. Let theater be theater for a little while. People are just trying to cash in.
And another.. REESE!?!?!? Can't stand her. Acting. Talking. Look. Interviews. So Annoying.
K, I'm done.

As an avid Wicked fanatic (yes thats right! hate me if you wish!) I would LOVE, LOVE, LOVE to see a Wicked movie done!!!
As far as which Wicked would be best on film, I must disagree with a movie taken from the book... the book was just not that good and I can't imagine a movie making it any better. The stage production put to film, however, would be awesome! And I think audiences would like it a lot more... people eat up all the big suprises at the ending and those things added in the play are what put a lot more excitement and unpredictability to the story (and also tie it in a little more to the original Wizard of Oz.) Also, a musical-version movie based on the play would reach out to a much bigger audience. Staying true to the book would prob get a PG13 rating which would rule out most kids ever seeing the show. With a play version, adults can enjoy it, teens can go crazy about it, and parents will go out buying for their little kids who can laugh and love it too and adding music also would boost soundtrack sales (and who wouldn't love another WICKED recording!!!) I just really think the Broadway version would make a better all around movie. Besides, isn't that what we all want? More people to fall in love with the magic of musicals? (And with the success of "Chicago", "Phantom", and next up "Rent" surely a huge "Wicked" movie with depth, humor, singing, and dancing would be a hit!)
As for the characters... while I LOVE THEM TO DEATH... I agree that the mixture of Eden and Kristin may make the characters a little too old for the story. (and if a movie really did come out it wouldn't be prob for like 5 yrs). Idina could maybe get away with it (which I would LOVE!) but I doubt Kristin could pull of a freshman in college anymore.... she'll be FORTY soon! Either way, I guess the amazing talent would make up for it. If the originals didn't do it my vote is for Eden and Kendra!!! (who are both AMAZING and look a lot younger.)
I hope Reese actually pushes this movie... it would be awesome!
Reese is about as far from brainless as one can get. She is (in real life) as far from the Legally Blond personna as one can get. That being said.
I would love to see Wicked brought to the screen. And I would adore it if Reese were Glinda, granted I wouldn't want her to sing the soprano parts if she wasn't capable. (She could be dubbed for the higher singing parts). In Poto it worked really well with Minnie being dubbed.
Also personally I am a little tired of Chenoweth and Menzel in the roles. They were fantastic, but I want to see someone new in those roles when it hits the big screen.
My choices (as they have always been):
Glinda: Reese Elphaba: (No idea, I would love to do it...) Fieyro: Heath Ledger Morrible: Judi Dench Wizard: Jonathan Pryce Nessa: Natalie Portman Boq: Elijah Wood
All (I repeat all) of the above have singing training. With the possible exception of Nat, who I think has had some training.
I know what you mean EponineThenardier, as much as they rock in those roles I love seeing new faces(who are equally as talented as them too)
my cast would be(if wicked was made within 4 years) Elphaba: Jennifer Garner(can in fact sing, who knows about belting though) Glinda: Reese(if she had miracle working singing lessons) Fiyero: Ewan Mcgregor Morrible: Glen Close Wizard: Richard Gere Boq: Elijah Wood Nessa: Anne Hathaway, or (don't kill me)Jennifer Love Hewitt
I'm not feeling the Richard Geere vibe, but I think Ewan McGregor and Anne Hathaway are brilliant choices for those roles.
As for miracle singing lessons...Gerry Butler was taught how to sing by ALW, and I think he did a very respectable job as the Phantom. Doesn't even come close to my favorite stage Phantoms, but pretty good overall.
Jules, I'm totally with you on Ewan. As for book or musical versions, I think I'd rather see the musical. I loved the book, but it was very slow at first.
Megan Mullally as Karen Walker on Will and Grace: "Tell me more. Tell me more. Like does he have a car?"
LyTeMyCanDyI: same here, the book's good but the musical is phenominal, I definetely prefer a musical film than book. A Ewan would make a great fiyero(since Norbert's too good and too old for a screen fiyero) especially if he uses his Moulin Rouge look, and speaking of Moulin Rouge, if ever make a wicked movie(whether it's 6 to 12 years from now) they should get the same set designer or Tim Burton(hey is it me or does Wicked remind you of Edward Scissorhands? they both have sorta the same ending too)
Anyways I'm all for a wicked musical film and unfortunetely it won't happen anytime soon as long as the show is selling out everywhere, universal has no need for one and the only reason Hairspray and Producers are getting turned into movies are because they were already movies to begin with
I think he can, I remember when babysitting I heard him sing in a cartoon movie(tom thumb or something)but I don't remember if he was good singer or not and it'd be more funny than scary to me if he played boq becuase it would be a sorta homage to frodo in a way and I chose him becuase he's the only one I can think of in hollywood that fits the part(that and Topher Grace isn't short and can't sing lol-hey the obc boq reminded me of him)
He wasn't in Straight Up. It was Forever Your Girl. He was the little kid sitting at the desk dressed like a business man. he looked stressed and broke his pencil. (God, the fact that I know that!)
Idina: This is called a kielbasa!
Pianist: It's called a 'KA-basa'...
Idina: It's called a kabasa? Oh, a KIEL-basa's a sausage, isn't it? I CAN PLAY THAT TOO! HULLO!!
As much as I want Kristin and Idina in the roles, I think they're going to just wait out their contracts, and cast big name stars. Also, Marc Platt was a producer on Legally Blonde and said several complimentary things about Reese in her EW cover story a few weeks back. They're might actually be something to this story. I sincerely hope not, though, because I'm a big fan of sticking with the original stars.
I can definitely see a non singing version of wicked based on the book....with Stephen Schwartz revising and rewriting a non vocal score...with hints of the music from the stage show(how cool would that be?)I love wicked and all its beauty on stage....but I cant see it as a movie musical (although I have some awesome ideas for no good deed that involve elphie by the sea in the middle of a thunderstorm on a cliff)But no matter I would be highy thrilled to see any wicked movie!!!
But as far as Reeses as Glinda goes....Everyone should go rent the movie Vanity Fair...excellent movie and Reeses sings in it... rock on reese...
and of course my beloved Idina would play elphie (Idina Is my goddess)
So they need to hurry up and produce the movie before she gets too old....
