"Rising singer-songwriter and Sire/Warner Bros. recording artist Regina Spektor will join playwright / director Tina Landau (Floyd Collins) and lyricist Michael Korie (Grey Gardens) to create the new musical BEAUTY, to be produced by Elephant Eye Theatrical (Stuart Oken, Michael Leavitt, Five Cent Productions), aiming for the 2011-12 Broadway season, following an out-of-town tryout to be announced. Landau will write the book and direct; Spektor the music, and Korie the lyrics."
All I can say is that I am SO excited for this!

I usually don't get too excited for things before they've been worked on a bit but...
Wow. That makes me so excited. I'm sitting here grinning.

Posted: 9/16/09 at 12:36pmRegina Spektor is one of my favorite musicians. Her songs are beautifully written and I'm really excited to hear her work as a musical score - I know that it will be lovely. Combining that with Michael Korie ... this is going to be a show I won't be missing.

Yay! I've been saying she should do this for years. Now she just had to convince her pal Ben Folds to jump on the bandwagon and write a musical, and all will be right in the world.

Posted: 9/17/09 at 3:47amThe song Spektor was on was the best part of Folds' lackluster last album. (And I say this as a huge Ben Folds fan.) Anyway, I've never heard her music being sung by anyone else, and with the collaborators named in the article, this sounds really interesting, with the potential to be great.

So this is evidently a reworking of a short musical with book by Tina Landau that played in LA with Kelli O'Hara and Jason Danieley:

On a different note...
"Folds' lackluster last album. (And I say this as a huge Ben Folds fan.)" COMPLETELY AGREE. So disappointing.
I hope she writes more like Soviet Kitsch than the more pop-y stuff of Begin to Hope.

AGREED! Although, Far is pretty good too. Her best melodies, imo, are on Soviet Kitsch.

Posted: 9/19/09 at 1:23amI think FAR is actually pretty decent. I saw her perform at a Barnes and Noble talkback thing, and it was just her on piano and a cello and violin, and it was beautiful! But then I got the CD and listen to it, and the orchestrations are terrible. It just sounds so cheesy pop.

Posted: 9/19/09 at 11:56amAw, I love Begin to Hope. If the musical sounds like that, I'd be there with bells on. Really though, I'd be there if it sounds like *any* of her music. Love. Her.

Being an adaptation of a fairy tale I'd imagine the music she'll write will sound more like her last two albums (mainly the ballads), very erethral and whimsical, though the second act, which will be set "closer to the present day" according to an article on MTV.com, might have more of her pre-Begin to Hope anti-folk/jazz/punk sound.
At any rate Far is a great album and kinda blends her experimental early stuff with her new sound. Soviet Kitch is still her best work.

Only yesterday there was an interview with Landau where she mentions it as still in progress:
It's here.
