All Broadways shows are filmed. I think once the show is closed the producers should then release the play on DVD or as One Night Only Event at Cinemas. (They did this for Rent). This would expose Broadway to more people and its another Avenue of Revenue for shows to recoup their cost..

I wish I could sing.

Um, they do this already with some shows check out FATHOM EVENTS. We saw the West End production of Merrily We Roll Along. Also the Met Opera does live broadcasts.

They aren't a way to make more money. They'd have to pay the writers, director, actors, crew members, musicians, etc fees. Then there are distribution and marketing costs. It would take years and years of a dvd release to make it's money back. The only ones that would possibly be worth it are shows that were big big hits in their runs--Wicked, Les Mis, Book of Mormon.

If everyone especially the unions would get together and hammer out an agreement it could be done

Without same compensation costs for all involved would makes costs of for these releases economically unfeasible.

Now you see why bootlegs have become a booming business.

Not all shows are filmed but most are as part of Theatre on Film and Tape Archive (TOFT). The Archive is available to theatre professionals, students, or researchers with work or study-related reasons for viewing. Advance appointments are strongly recommended for viewing. So if you missed a show and are a student, go and check it out. and it's free. Most I have seen are dead on shots of the stage with little or no camera movement.

I think it's great when a musical gets released on dvd so that people can watch it everywhere around the world, even for people who have never been able to be inside a theater. They just released Shrek a few months ago and I wish this would become a trend (even if it's only among the "big ones") a believe the likes of Beauty and the Beast or Spider Man could make a lot of money on dvd.

If there were a big enough market for it and proven to be lucrative, producers would do it. It's simply not feasible and not worth the investment. It's a business decision. Plain and simple. And the right one at that.

So you believe they decided to put Cats, Phantom of the opera, Jesus Christ Superstar and all those musicals to dvd and made no money on them?

Jesus Christ Superstars would be a really great name for a Christian dance troupe.

I'm thinking it's more the title of a Christian-themed dance-based home workout video series.

Words don't deserve that kind of malarkey. They're innocent, neutral, precise, standing for this, describing that, meaning the other, so if you look after them you can build bridges across incomprehension and chaos. But when they get their corners knocked off, they're no good anymore…I don't think writers are sacred, but words are. They deserve respect. If you get the right ones in the right order, you can nudge the world a little.
